barturtle
WHY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT JOE Easy. if they consume 25% of the world's spirit supply and they suddenly start consuming 25% of the worlds bourbon supply, what do you think is gonna happen to prices and availability? I do think it's a great thing for the market in the long run...more bourbon sold, means more production, more producers and even better prices long term as production/expansion costs are spread across more product...but those reductions are a long way away. As they say, it'll get worse before it gets better, stock up now to get yourself through the rough part:cool:

bobbyc
Someone form Beam once went over the prospect of supply if every drinking age person in China bought a single 200 ml of their product. I have forgot the numbers but the ramp up on production just to meet that demand would be staggering, no pun intended.
Bob O.
Lets just hope that reducing proofs isn't part of a solution to make the Whiskey go further.
RedVette
This could be wonderful news. Anything we can sell to China to reduce the trade imbalance is great news for our country.
bluesbassdad
Bobby,Here's my quick shot at it.Current population of China = ~ 1,300,000,000Assume 75% are of drinking age.Drinking population = ~ 975,000,000 (Let's round up to an even billion.)(200 ml / 1000 ) X 1,000,000,000 = 200,000,000 liters. Is a case of bourbon 15 bottles of 750 ml. each? Then dividing be each of those numbers yields 17,777,777 cases. How does that compare to current production? I don't know.Yours truly,Dave Morefield

I have forgot the numbers but the ramp up on production just to meet that demand would be staggering, no pun intended.I have carried bourbon from the USofA to China, carried it back through customs in China and customs in the USofA and returned it to--as Bobby has put it--where it was "birthed"--in Kentucky. I still keep a DFS stash on the mainland, actually!I have also purchased bourbon on the Chinese mainland, carried it across the border to Hong Kong, then hauled it through customs into the USofA. One such Beam bottle of note bears the images of only 5 Master Distillers.Hear, hear, if more bourbon makes it to mainland China!
smokinjoe
I say, sell as much as you can. I want the BT's, HH's etc to be as successful as they can be. But regardless of what the bourbon producers may sell, I don't believe it will be so overwheming as to upset the market here in North America. We, as a country/region, have overestimated what we can sell to the Chinese market, since it was more fully opened up a decade or so ago. I think we, as consumers, will be OK. No $30 JBW, or $75 ETL on the horizen. I am thinking more of the prospect of (a good one, or bad one...take your pick) a high quality Chinese "bourbon?" at $6/750ml. That, has been more of the model of our trade relations to date. JOE
Hyperspace
If bourbon makes a big splash in China, it will only be a matter of time before they start counterfeiting bourbon…just like they do with all kinds of other products. Kim in NK wants some too…

Hell who says every bottle of old stock stuff you get off ebay is real?Anything that reaches a high enough value will be counterfeited. It's only a matter of whether it is cost effective to do so....shoes, purses, wallets, cars (you should see the blatant rip offs you can get in China), then of course there are gray-market imports, stolen merchandise... Hyperspace
And who says they aren't already?:smiley_acbt: Indeed, they probably got 10-year olds printing Pappy, Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, etc., labels in sweat shops as I post this...
