Another Great Deal?

I have stumbled on yet another PA closeout item, at what appears to be a great price. This time it's Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit and the price is only 28.99.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that there are only 8 botttles left in the state, and none of them are what you'd call 'down the street'. However a couple are within a 35-40 minute drive (thanks to my proximity to the turnpike). I have one on hold in Allentown that I hope to pick up tonight, and two in South Philadelphia.

Please tell me this is a good find and that I should be racing to pick these up.

(And don't tell BourbonJoe. It appears he also lives in this neck of the woods and may beat me to the punch.)

I think I saw the same thing on the PLCB site last week, but when I looked for them in Philly, they were listed as being at the "Wholesale Store."

Can just any old guy walk into the wholesale stores in PA and buy a bottle?

PA is a strange state do buy alcohol of any kind. I remember traveling through Indiana, PA and wanted to purchase a case. The liquor store owner said that I could only purchase 6-packs and if I wanted more than that I'd have to go to the "warehouse" down the street.

This is going back a god 7-8 years so I'm not sure I'm totally correct here, but it goes something like that anyway. Also, you can't purchase any alcohol after 8PM.

Just to add my confirmation, yes, that's a jump-at-it price for a very good whiskey.

Has anyone else noticed the label and stopper change on KY Spirit bottles? The wooden stopper is lighter in color, and the label has replaced the signature turkey picture with simply words. I think I'll pick up a bottle of the former for posterity.

Well I got one. Had to drive to Allentown this evening to do it. My wife balked at first, but let me go as long as I took the boy too. I guess I have an 'older' one being that the turkey picture is on the label. I know MissingKY got one of the two at the wholesale store in Philly. If the last one is still there on Thursday, I may try for number two.

PA is a bit weird, but i guess it's what you're used to. Wine and spirits can only be bought in a Wine and Spirits store. No wine in supermarkets or anything like that. Beer can be had in sixpacks and maybe 12 packs at bars that have them for sale. To get a full case (or a keg for that matter), you need to go to a beer distributer ('warehouse' as it was so eloquently put).

But things have improved recently. Many Wine and Spirits stores are now open until 10:00 (gasp). I don't know of any beer distributers that are open that late, but I suppose some exist. Also some W&S stores and distributers are open on Sundays now. Seriously. Before a couple years ago, unless you were okay with a six-pack or a quart, you were SOL if you wanted beer on sunday in this state. And you could absolutely forget about trying to get wine or spirits.

I still have a couple of the older "Pewter" stoppered bottles. I liked those better than the wooden replacements. All good bourbon, though.
