How would you sum up what makes a bourbon good in one (not too long) sentence?

Here is a quote from Chuck Cowdery's book, "Bourbon, Straight" that does it neatly:

"Extra age and proof don't automatically make a bourbon good, but they are a good place to start".

It's on page 214.

How about this: extra age seldom makes a bourbon good. ;)

In all honesty, if I remember correctly, when Chuck wrote about extra age, he didn´t refer to the dinosaurs we have to put up with now. I think he meant bourbon that was between 10-15 years old.
