I see BT is releasing two new BTEC's this August. Both are finished in zinfandel barrels. The younger one is aged 6 years in a new barrel followed by eight in a zinfandel barrel. The oldest is aged ten years in a new barrel and eight years in a used zinfandel barrel. I hope to get a taste someday......I am a red wine kind of guy!

Does anyone remember hearing that BT was aging bourbon like this 8 years ago?

It just goes to show the innovation of the folks at BT. Sure, other people are trying this sort of thing these days, like the new woodford SC finish, but that was only finished for about 6 months in the barrel.......and BT thought of doing this back in 1999. Kudos to them.

Some of these things must have begun very early in Mark Brown's tenure. Brown returned to Sazerac from Brown-Forman in 1997. It looks like they started the experiments soon thereafter.

I first learned about the experimental program early in 2004. I note that at the time one thing they said they would not do was finishes so, as far as they're concerned, what they're doing with used wine barrels is not "finishing."

Where can I find a press release or info sheet to print off? I looked all over BT''s site and don't see anything.

My info was from "WhiskeyNotes".....an email service from Malt Advocate sending out updates from the world of whiskey. It appeared to be "extracted" from a BT press release....but not sure. I can email you what I have.....if I can find it.

I'd appreciate it. I'm sending my favorite service man a letter.

Is the distribution on the last two experimentals much less than the first edition? Even among this group there were almost no postings on the Chardonnay version and I'd imagine that we all hear about these things before the rest of the population.

It could also be the fact that people aren't fond of the idea of bourbon being finished in Chardonnay barrels? :skep: I know I for one couldn't care less about it....I am not a fan of Chardonnay, but when I heard about the Zinfandel finishes....well there's a different story......I'll be getting me some of that!

I think I have access to a second set if anyone is interested, I'd rather see it go to someone who'd appreciate it....

Time to dust off the old wallet and make a call down to Kentucky.... NYS distributors have their heads so deep in the sand that they can't even manage to ship Beam or Jack at the moment.

I'm still waiting on mine, I wont have them for a few weeks yet. Then those mongrels in customs will probably hold them for 2 weeks like all the other stuff I've got in the past fortnight. :hot: In the past 2 weeks they have charged me $800 in duty and GST.

They should be shot.

I saw a couple of Cab Francs on a shelf a few days ago, but since I haven't bothered to pick up the Zin set saved for me by another retailer, wasn't in a tizzy to buy these instead. $75 a (375ml) bottle.

For 75 bucks for a 375, they'd have to be in a Platinum bottle for me to buy em.

When experimentals came around a year or so ago, we split the costs 4 ways with our tasting group, as noone wanted to pony up for full bottles, but all were interested in what was going on.

I still have 4 oz sample bottles as my take, which is just right for me to pull out on a bourbon night some time in the future. I doubt I'd make a point of drinking them otherwise.

I tasted the older zin version at my favorite retailer. A whole lot going on but all over the place taste wise. Difinite zinfandel color and in the nose. Dry and fruity.I did not care for the mix. The zin seemed to be overpowering the bourbon and the 2 seemed to be competing rather than complementing each other. Interesting to taste but in my opinion, not working well together.
