Latest Buffalo Trace Experimental Bourbon

Has anyone out there yet gotten their hands on the latest Buffalo Trace offering - the one aged in white zinfandel barrels?

My bottles should arrive in Florida in a couple weeks, but I figured some of you Kentucky folks may already have tried it.

Well, I have bought some, but not for myself. They say zinfandel, but don't say white...I hope they're not white, but instead red zin.

I saw the 300ml chardonay offering for $200!!! The guy was very helpful but I just had to laugh when he suggested it. I told him there were so many others on my list before I got to something like that!

I sure hope they aint white Zin too......looking at the color of the bottles you got Timothy, one would have to think they were red.

White Zinfandel does not spend time in a barrel.

Zinfandel does though. Its pretty important to the wine. The wine demands the coconutty aromas of American oak, since the Zin is so fruity and berry-like when young. The oak with some age is supposed to give the wine a real backbone.

Does anyone know how long the Zinfandel was kept in the barrel before putting the bourbon in?? Everything I know about Zinfandel wines always points to berry-like flavors. I'm wondering what they are going to do to a bourbon like BT's.

What I find odd is that I didn't see a press release for this 3rd set. Did anyone else or is it not officially out yet?

After re-reading the release, I realize I spoke too soon about the zinfandel being white.

To answer some of the questions, there are two varieties: (this is copied straight from the press release)

1. ZINFANDEL AGED AFTER SIX YEARS: This whiskey was bourbon that was aged for six years and three months in a new oak barrel before it was re-barreled into a used American Oak Zinfandel barrel. There it was aged for another eight years, making it a total of 14 years old. The expected wine fruitiness is absent in the initial palette, but is replaced with an exciting spiciness. It is not the rye-grain spice normally associated with bourbon, but a grape-vine herbal quality that slides across the tongue and lingers for what seems like forever. This is an epic whiskey with grandeur and grace. Old world quaffing of a vine and field mélange.

2. ZINFANDEL AGED AFTER TEN YEARS: This whiskey was bourbon aged for ten years and four months in a new oak barrel. Then it was then re-barreled in a used American Oak Zinfandel barrel for another 8 years. Aged a total of 18 years this whiskey carries little subtlety. The original whiskey brings powerful flavors to the refinement of the zinfandel wine barrel. The battle of flavor is won rather than shared by the bourbon. The zinfandel does dance along the edges with its dry herbal flavorings, but the bourbon fills the ballroom with its grain and wood bouquet.
