Down in SA, TX there are 2 liquor stores that I know of that give a 20 % discount on either Friday or Friday/Saturday on everything except sale items. Sounds wonderful and keeps me out of the stores on weekdays.

Anyone else enjoy this discount? Picked up a $38 dollar bottle of Baker's for $33.

Why would anyone bother going on any other day. Seems like a great way to kill business, only selling when there are big discounts. Great for the consumer but I wouldn't expect the retailer to survive long unless they start artificialy increasing the regular prices before the discount.

Alcoholics and people stocking up for house parties need it when they need it. Where they have bins full of empties waiting for trash day, enthusiasts have the luxury of many open bottles (or dozens!) from which to choose a pour, and can wait for another purchase...in theory.

Clerks say they get regulars trying to get the discount all week. They say they would like to get rid of it. They don't advertise it anywhere so I guess the casual consumer just walks in on any day and for whatever reason it sounds like the regulars don't stock up on weekends. Like I said it really keeps me away during the weekdays!!

I wonder what the business reason would be for doing that? It seems counter-intuitive. You normally give day-of-the-week discounts to stimulate business on your slow days. Why give people an incentive to shop on the days when they're most likely to shop for this type of product anyway? It doesn't make business sense. Also, 20 percent is an extraordinary discount for liquor. I find this whole story implausible.

Chuck,

I can not speek for the 20%, though in Austin we get 15% for buying two of the same item. There are a great number of ads for discounted liquor in the paper on the weekends. I have posted a few of them in "Local Prices" thread. I know that the owners are not very excited about running the sales, but it seems to be a tradition. Could have started back durring the Blue Law days.

Chuck,

Implausible or not it's a fact. Here are the two stores I mentioned. Feel free to call them....just don't get it changed!

There must be extreme competition going on among the liquor stores in that particular market. This type of business tactic reminds me of when gas stations begin "gas wars" where they lower prices to gain business and then in turn, the next guy down the street undercuts him a couple pennies more.
