I had never heard of this either, but Bourbonv (M. Veach) noted on another site this was passed years ago and somehow overlooked.

Mike must have been referring to something else. This is new. Jim Beam made it happen. It was a senate resolution. September was chosen to tie-in with the festival.

I hope Mike doesn't mind but I took this from one of the other sites. This was a direct quote.

In 1958 Schenley, National Distillers and others came together to create the Bourbon Institute. This organization later became part of DISCUS. One of the first things they did was to petition congress to make September bourbon month. The U. D. archive has many examples of articles and advertisements aimed for the September issues of trade magazines and other periodicals promoting September as bourbon month. I am curious as to wether there was a 50 year time limit on the action and this is a renewal or if they simply forgot about the past legislation.
