DrinkyBanjo
How long has this been bottled? Are you combining barrel dates with bottling dates above?
Sijan
Each one has a different age - usually around 12 years. The barrelled-on and bottled-on dates are listed on the bottles. I think the 2004 bottling was from 1995 so was only 9 years old. It is the youngest bottling of the OFBBs.I generally use the bottled-on dates, since the barrelled-on dates can be confusing given that the 2005 and 2006 releases were barrelled in the same year. However, the 2003 OFBB had two editions - one that was barrelled in Spring 1990 and one that was barrelled in Fall 1990. LarryG
Thank you, Dawn and Dan. Looking at some pictures I found on the 'net, and factoring in my increasingly-fallible memory, I want to say that the two bottles I found are vintage 2005. I was thinking the label had some magenta on it, even before I found the confirming picture; and I'm virtually certain "Birthday Bourbon" was in a script font rather than the block letters used in years before 2005. The blue from 2006 could be right, although I don't remember that much color on the seal. In short ... I just flat don't remember. IAC I shall pick up a bottle and force myself to drink it, regardless of year. Larry
mgilbertva
2004 and 2007 are not bad, but are not as good as the others IMO.Hah! These are the two I have tried, and have open. In other threads I slammed the '04 as being nearly undrinkable. And it was when first opened. However, that bottle has now been open for almost 9 months and it has changed quite a bit. It's quite nice, although I haven't analyzed it enough to give a coherent description yet. I actually like it now. Nevertheless, I too have heard the '02 is best. In fact, I now have a bottle thanks to tango-papa, plus I have the '06 bunkered too. I'll report back when I try them.
Sijan
I tried the OFBB 2007 again a few nights ago and had very similar impressions to my earlier notes. It has such a great nose, but the palate is really a let-down.The OFBB 2003 - Fall 1990, on the other hand, was very light and floral last night, with a long finish. LarryG
I'd forgotten about this thread. As it turns out, the OFBB my local ABC store had was the 2006 edition. I bought a bottle, and like it quite well; but it's my first try of this series so I've nothing to compare it against. They now have the 2007 in stock and, despite some of the comments here, I put it on my Christmas list.Larry
jburlowski
It's worth a try... at its price point (at least here locally) you wont be totally disappointed,,, and perhaps pleased. I rate it as good / very good.
Old Lamplighter
Finally picked up an 06 last night but not seen an 07 yet down here in western TN. Probably will try the 06 before Christmas. The store where I found it had a few more bottles. If it is good, may pick up another for the stash.
Old Lamplighter
Have not seen the 07 bottle yet, but if it is anything close to the 05 it should be good. Planning to open my 06 over the weekend and check it out.
cowdery
You know, if you don't have a problem with at least one of the Birthday Bourbons, you probably aren't paying attention, because they supposed to all be different--at least as different as whiskeys can be that all start out the same. I'm not really saying you have to hate one, just making the point that the series is unique in aiming for inconsistency.
Sijan
That's what I like about the series, even if I don't like each of the bottlings.
BourbonJoe
I have em all and don't dislike any of them. Chuck is right on about them being very different from each other.Joe :usflag:
Old Lamplighter
A very unique series and one that I have enjoyed, albeit for a short period of time.
Veevee
I don't know if it's well known, or ignored, or unheard of by some whiskey drinkers, but it will help "open up" a liquor (read: whiskey, for the most part) and make it more palatable (read: unreal, sometimes) if a slight bit of pure water is added. These are usually high-proof, right? So all the more reason to try it that way. I am talking about half ounce or less per shot. Spring water works best.##this was meant to augment the post from the guy above that said the one bottling was nearly undrinkable-hope it makes more sense that way! Taggerung
Do most of you buy a bottle to bunker and one to sample?
birdman1099
Do most of you buy a bottle to bunker and one to sample? I go into it with those intentions, But after the first bottle is gone, I have a hard time not opening the second. Especially if it is really good. I think I would need to buy 3 or 4 bottles !!! Old Lamplighter
Do most of you buy a bottle to bunker and one to sample?Depends upon the rarity/allocation. Under normal circumstances, no. Under more stringent conditions, yes and maybe a third one for good measure.
mgilbertva
I thought I would add a link here in case anyone is doing research on '07 OFBB. Sort of a later progress report here.
