Kentucky Bound

I have a family wedding to attend the weekend of October 13th in Russell Springs. It looks to be around 80 mins south of Bardstown. I'll be travelling through L'Ville and wanted to stop at Liquor Barn or any other store that has a large supply of bourbons. My time will be very limited so I will only get one shot and stopping and shopping. Specifically, I would like to know the following:

1. What liquor store should I stop at in L'Ville or maybe Toddy's in Bardstown?

2. What bourbon should I look for that I can't find elsewhere, e.g. KY only releases, etc.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I know it's probably a long shot, but I hope the BTAC is released in KY at that point. Thanks in advance for the input.

Toddy's is a very small store. It has a good selection but not a vast one. I found three stores in Bardstown, the one on the north side(hwy 285?) and Toddy's were the best.

The items that I picked and liked: Dowling's Deluxe Bib 8yr, Wathens, VROHH 10yr Bib, RittenH Rye Bib(IMO not the best, but great value), Toddy's had a Beam Bib(Happy Hollow or something like that), didnt pick it up though.

Any of the Four Roses are basically KY. and NYC bottles only. The Beam BIB is called Bourbon Hollow and is/was available in Va. My parents bought me a bottle at a store near Wytheville while on the way to Myrtle Beach. depending on your route to KY. (if you are driving), there is also a fantastic store just across the river from Cincinnati. Good luck with the bottle hunting!

BTW, I hit every store between BT, FR and HH....not a dusty in one of the them(4-1-07).

The Beam BIB is Old Bourbon Hollow. I picked up a bottle here in VA a couple months back but have not opened it.

I'd recommend the Liquor Barn on Hurstborne or Springhurst in Louisville. Forget driving to Bardstown. I know everybody likes the selection at the small Toddy's store in Bardstown, but you can find everything he has at the bigger stores in Louisville. I'm a bit HONKED off at the price Toddy's tried to get for the FRSB 40th Anniv bottle. You could buy it at Four Roses for $60.....at Liquor Barn for $59.99 and I heard some people got it at other stores in Louisville and Bardstown for $55. Toddy's price was up another $15. Bite me?!?!

Correction....you can't get Doug's 4yr Willet in Louisville.

Between Liquor Barn and Party Mart in Louisville you should be able to find most anything that is normally sold in KY

Thanks again for the input. Unfortunately, I'll be unemployed mid October and will be on my Birthday budget so I have to choose wisely. My hope is that the '07 BTAC will have been released in KY by then but I'm not holding my breath.

I can get most things in Chicago and usually limit my Kentucky shopping to bottles I can't get here. Below is what I bought last week. (All 750 ml except where indicated.)

Very Old Barton BIB, 1.75 L

Mellow Corn

Heaven Hill BIB

JTS Brown BIB (2)

Old Charter 8-year-old

They ranged in price from $8.49 for the HH to $21.99 for the VOB.

I also always buy some other Kentucky treats you can't find elsewhere. This time it was the following:

Kentucky hickory-smoked sausage and bacon

Kentucky country ham (biscuit cuts)

(Kentuckians are almost as good with pork as they are with corn.)

Benedictine (a cucumber and onion-flavored cream cheese spread or dip)

Henry Bain sauce (a steak sauce)

So what's the status on VOB BIB anyway? I remember rumors of its untimely demise, but it's still plentiful AFAICT.

Oh, and no need to buy Benedictine, just follow this:

1 cucumber peeled and seeded

1/4 red onion

1 block cream cheese

1+ dash(es) hot sauce

salt and pepper to taste

Grate cucumber and allow to drain thoroughly (for best results use a cheesecloth and press out any excess moisture.) Grate onion and mix it and cucumber with the softened cream cheese. Add hot sauce, salt and pepper to taste. Add a drop or 2 of green food coloring if desired, but it is in no way necessary. Chill and enjoy! :yum:

As much as I hate to disagree with Jeff, the food coloring is entirely necessary. (Although Doll's Market, in Louisville, another high authority, does not add it to their homemade product.)

As for VOB BIB, I seem to recall someone offering a clarification, which I believe is that the 100-proof expression isn't going away, just the BIB designation. But that's a vague memory, I could be wrong. Agreed, there is no problem finding it.

At first glance this makes no sense. But then I start to think of why...now they can use product from multiple seasons and years (and even shudder distilleries). Makes good economic sense.

A bit sad to see the BIB leave the label as I like to know that what I have is from one place, though the seasons and years don't matter that much in a mass market bottling like this. If they were to put a distilled and bottled by statement with DSP numbers I would be satisfied that it was from one place, but without it could be from anybody who had excess product.

They could even take the BIB back to 4yo like it was before the 6yo statement and I would be fine with that, but I want my whiskey to represent one distillery, unless they are going to announce that is is a vatting of multiple places

Chuck....thanks for throwing that one in. I love Ginger and Rye and I'm always on the lookout for a different Ginger Ale. I'll assume Liquor Barn would carry it so I'll be sure to grab that along with my bourbon purchases.

Old Town Wine and Spirits in Louisville has a September 2007 Weller Antique 107 Proof, un-filtered, single barrel, 9 yr old available. Several bottles were available at the Gazebo and other KBF events.

The second barrel in the series is scheduled to be bottled on Friday, September 19th and should be available by mid October.

I have only made it down to the Lexington stores a couple times, but they seem to have a selection that is every bit as good as the Louisville ones. Having said that, even in Louisville the stores carry a slightly different selection depending on the neighborhood served by that location...though sometimes all the stores will get in limited edition bottlings.

I have read posts on these boards from Ed and Jeff that the Thoroughbred Shop in Lexington has a very nice selection also. You might try there, as well.
