I believe the Ohio River is in Kentucky along the border with Indiana (not split between the two states), so the mouth of the Wabash River may touch the state.

OK, I get that "Old Brown Whistle Test" plays on the "Old Factory Whistle" and the "Old Grey Whistle Test", but what is the other rock and roll reference?

  • 3 weeks later...

Recent posts in the 'What Ten High Means" thread prompted my to think of a name for a bourbon, one that's purposely a bit rough and slightly over proof (think Fighting Cock). How about Aces and eights. The bottle and label could evoke old west imagery. It would be positioned to compete with Bulliet.

Brad's avatar got me thinking that Yosemite Sam's Wild West Bourbon would be a good name. And to borrow from Dane the cartoon balloon could say, "Drink it Straight Ya Doggone Ijit Gallute!"

A few names inspired by some favorite musical artists:

Inspired by

Dwight Yoakam: "Hillbilly Deluxe"

Steve Earle: "Copperhead Road"

Johnny Cash: "Mean Eyed Cat"

Dolly Parton by way of Merle Haggard: "Kentucky Gambler"

Bruce Springsteen (channeling Robert Mitchum): "Thunder Road"

Bob Dylan: "Maggie's Farm"

Neil Young: "Ragged Glory" (there are a million other Neil Young titles to choose from: "Harvest," "Harvest Moon," "Old Ways," et al.)

Gram Parsons: "Hickory Wind"

Townes Van Zandt: "Tecumseh Valley"

Billy Joe Shaver: "Black Rose" (this one would have to be a whiskey that could do justice to the first two lines of the chorus: "The devil made me do it the first time/The second time I done it on my own.")

Jimmie Rodgers by way of Bill Monroe: "Mule Skinner"

Speaking of Bill Monroe: "Rose of Old Kentucky" or "Uncle Pen"

Ian Tyson: "Four Strong Winds" (one of my favorite Canadians)

That's all I have for now...

Old Whisker's Whiskey BIB 93.5 proof

Not to be too picky, but to be Bottled in Bond it must be 100 proof.

By the way, there are a couple of brands here in Japan that are similar to some of the names suggested in this thread.

Jazz Club: There are several different labels, each one features a different jazz artist.

Outlaw: These feature different wanted posters of infamous old west bad men.

There are rye bourbons but a straight rye is a different style of whiskey. Bourbon has to have at least 51% corn in the mashbill and a straight rye has to have at least 51% rye. Most bourbons have a good deal more than 51% corn, but I think most ryes are pretty close to the 51% limit.

Sorry for the off topic stuff, if anyone minds.

Let's see...

"CUMBERLAND FALLS" (My favorite place in Kentucky)

"OLD MOONBOW" (Happens at Cumberland Falls once per month. Pretty cool to see)

"CASSIUS CLAY'S 12 YR" (My favorite athlete of all time, in any sport. Hails from Louisville. With all due and humble respect to The Greatest, I just can't see "MUHAMMAD ALI" being that big a seller, though.

"BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY - Straight bourbon whiskey" (25 years of doing this square dance at Cumberland Falls, and I still can't get it right.)

"DR. DUNKENSTEIN'S BARREL PROOF" (For one of the most exciting players to ever play the game of basketball, Darrell Griffith. Of course, a U of L alum)

Cheers!

JOE
