hey folks

well, my parents are back down in Mississippi (the DeKalb/Meridian area) until early December, enjoying their new retirement/free-time challenge (i.e., MSU season tickets!)...

and i've made a few requests for them to bring a few goodies back: local hot sauces that i can't get up here, some cajun stuff...

but it's been YEARS since i bought bourbon or other whiskeys down there...

can anyone who knows the area/state well with regards to what's offered help me make a decent request for a bottle or two of something?

actually, i'm not thinking super high-end (i can't imagine Stagg is available there....) and PA and DE have alot i have yet to try...

i was even thinking one of the Dickels (i know, a TWhiskey...not a bourbon!) since i used to sip it and DON'T see it up here.

maybe Mellow Corn (read that thread last night about corn whiskeys)...

but what bourbons might i not know about that Mississippi (or even ALABAMA) might have...they will be visiting my Bama kin as well....

thanks for any suggestions!

Looking at the ABC list for Bama, the state looks like a void as far as stuff you can't get in PA. Mississippi is much the same, but there may be a few bottlings you can't get, the Mellow Corn being one of the better choices. 86 proof Very Old Barton, while, not the 100 proof, may be worth picking up. Ridgemont Reserve, doesn't seem to be on the PA list, but is in MS.

I agree, they have really raped the bourbon selection in Alabama over the past five years or so. You can still get a few awesome single-malt scotches, here, but not much interesting in the way of bourbon.

Surprises are everywhere. I bought a 2002 Stagg in Olive Branch, MS (outside Memphis, but definitely IN Mississippi) just a couple of years ago -- long after it should have been gone.

thanks folks.........but yeah, i think a simple Dickel might be my best option!

olive branch, MS is another world away from my old stompin' grounds of SCOOBA...as well as my last one, Long Beach (preKatrina).

(sigh)

aside from remembering also to tell my mom to bring me a MESS of pecans when they come back up in decemeber (i refuse to pay $8 for a small bag of pecans...something that i used to be able to find BUSHELS of all around my backyard when i lived down there), i wanted to get a few more comments on MELLOW CORN. how much is it about? is it clear? would it vat well with other whiskeys or bourbon???

so far, have heard good things about it. and sounds like something different.

Yes, it is clear. But, I personally would not want to drink it again.

thanks tim for that perspective. what was it that you didn't like? too sweet? too simple? too harsh? or is it just corn whiskeys?

by the way, where is Pelham? it's almost familiar...i was born in Troy...half my kin there went to Auburn...the other half, 'Bama...!
