All this talk of how high Canadian prices are for bourbon and Scotch has got me wondering what Americans pay in the US for different kinds of Canadian whisky. How much do you see brands like Crown Royal, Gibson's Finest, or Canadian Club Classic (12 yr.) going for?

Right now in New Hampshire we have,

Crown Royal 750 ml $18.99

Crown Royal Special Res. $31.99

Canadian Club Classic $15.99

I would expect these to rise slightly soon with the currency conditions now.

Well there you have it. Though our dollar is presently worth more, we are paying $28 for Crown Royal. If I ever hear of any American complaining that any kind of booze is overpriced, I'm going to go crazy...

I have never found a bottle of Gibsons Canadian in the US, only at duty free and in Canada. I bought mine for about 15.00 for a 1L. Gibsons 18 runs about 30.00 at duty free!

I guess it is not that surprising, when you consider that we pay more for books, cars, electronics, etc. in Canada.

Yeah, but we have free universal health care...

Now that you mention it, I remember hearing somewhere that much of the liqour taxes we pay goes to health care of social services. This does not excuse the high cost of books and other items, though...or maybe it does

  • 2 months later...

Just about three weeks ago two of the liquor retailers I shop stocked a product called Seagram's VO Gold, an 8 year old blended Canadian. The color is lovely, the packaging is upgraded over standard VO, and the back of the bottle describes the contents as the signature blend of master blender Arthur Peterson. The label also reads:

This special edition contains many rare and valuable whiskies, none less than eight years old. Under the guidance of the Master Blender, the most exceptional casks have been selected for his Signature Blend. Its golden hue is distinctive and inviting. Its aroma is rich and full bodied, with sweet notes of autumn fruit and wine. its taste is exceptionally mellow and delicate on the palate, with a warm, satisfying finish.

The Ohio retail is $16.30 and the product is very good, reminiscent of Scotch of the same color but distinctively North American in style. I detected a lingering, pleasant vanilla note to the finish. This blend is significantly better than Black Velvet Reserve, also 8 years old. I am wondering if this is a new offering, a one time offering, or something that comes out yearly but just got distribution here. If it's not going to be around long I would appreciate a tip so that I know to go and buy several.

If it is any indication, that product was just discontinued in my province. Could mean that it is no longer in production, but not necessarily...

VO Gold has been on shelves in Ohio's Liquor stores for at least a couple of years. I think it is a regular stock item!
