Jono
Well, the family has asked me for a Christmas list...and thinking a nice bottle would make a great gift....what are some bourbons on your wish list?I have not had any of the Pappy Van Winkle products.....15 yr or 20 yr old definitely on the list. Others?
camduncan
That's easy, I have three:Wild Turkey American Spirit (I might be lucky to find 1 or 2 of these)Parkers Heritage CollectionPappy 23I'd settle for a bottle of Bookers though
Jono
I am not familiar with Parkers ($79) and found this quote by Chuck C"This is why (for all the good it does) I caution new bourbon drinkers about products like Pappy. I'm not sure I like the term "acquired taste," but a 20-year-old bourbon isn't objectively 'better' than a four-year-old, it's just different."I am not a new bourbon drinker but only have limited Rye tasting experience...is Pappy or Sazerac a risk? I like the Rittenhouse 100 and WT Ryes.Bourbon...I always liked Buffalo Trace and could use a refill.Haven't tried Old Fitz....I will add Weller Centenial as endorsed by others postings. gr8erdane
Well, my list is pretty much covered by the first three:Stagg 07Parker's WT American SpirtI'd take an Evan Williams 23 if Santa had an extra but for the price I wouldn't ask a family member to get it for me. The others I figure two or three of the extended family members could buck up for...

HipFlask
Saz 18 yrVan Winkle 13 yr ryeVan Winkle 15Saz JrRitt 100 BIBStaggRare Breed I think any of those would look great under the tree. If I have been good this year I just might get one. If I have been bad (Much more likely) I'll find some charcoal filtered Tenessee Whiskey. Either way you gotta love the Holidays. Enjoy the season!!!
squire
I'm not a fan of overage spirits of any type. The Beefeater Gin in my martini for example is not aged but the quality is there. A whiskey may get smoother or rounder as it ages, and the difference is noticeable in the taste, but its quality is no better than its four year and a day old brethren from the same run. Chuck is certainly right and I concur. A good producer like Heaven Hill or Buffalo Trace will give me a good product throughout its range and I buy accordingly. When it comes to gift giving I prefer folks present me with a middle choice at best so they won't be out much and they will feel comfortable sitting down and enjoying it with me.Regards,Squire
HighTower
I have a Four Roses Platinum from Japan that is coming my way this christmas. Also a George Dickel Barrel Select.I'd love some Parkers, but believe me, in Australia I am lucky enough to be getting those!Parker's will have to come from Binnys!Scott
barturtle
The bottle I would love to get, but will probably never see is Wild Turkey 17yo...one that I have seen but will likely never own is Eagle Rare 15yo SB 107.
polyamnesia
i figure i won't put anyone on a wild goose chase (i'll do that!)...but i told my brother i'd be fine with almost anything Wild Turkey...but then a Michter's would be fine.i might buy that $75 of Pappy i saw in a red velvet bag for myself...if we get an XMAS bonus!if not, i would rather focus on getting anything that has been discontinued
texascarl
If there's a bonus check for me this year, a bottle of Russell's Reserve and a bottle of Kentucky Spirit to replace a few almost-empties.
TNbourbon
It's funny -- the handful of folks who know of my bourbon interest think I just ought to pursue something else. The chances of me getting a bottle for a gift is about as high as a Christmas Eve blizzard here in Middle Tennessee. 'Course, I use that as an excuse to 'gift' myself.
scratchline
Here's New York Magazine's list:http://nymag.com/guides/holidays/gifts/2007/40976/Now this is just miserable. A market that has recently seen the arrival of Four Roses, two new offerings from Wild Turkey, the release of the '07 Antique Collection and this is what they come up with. Not that there's anything necessarily "wrong" with any of these bourbons, and I wish someone would buy ME a bottle of the Parker's, but to a true bourbon-lover most of these would be pretty ho-hum gifts. WTF?-Mike
gr8erdane
You can get them at the Heaven Hill Visitor's center and I think I remember them being 230 bucks. Same bottle as the EW SB but with Blue Wax and label. Pretty but pricey.

SBOmarc
BUT....if someone gives you a bottle of JBWhite....do you really want to know what they were thinking??:bigeyes:My point is, they dont have to know that I have the collection that I do, JB White is just fine. After all, I wouldn't but it for myself.
Old Lamplighter
Just a thought.....Rittenhouse 23.....but, as already said, it is the thought that counts. The problem is that my thought does not usually go in hand with the thought of the gift giver.

Whiskey Willie
My point is, they dont have to know that I have the collection that I do, JB White is just fine. After all, I wouldn't but it for myself. I was thinking along the lines of: "Dear Santa, I know I've been kinda naughty this year. I will understand if you leave JB white instead of Weller 12. Thank you. Sincerely, Little Whiskey Willie."
barturtle
Any bottle. It does not matter, it is truly the thought that matters. If they like me well enough to get me a gift, and know me well enough to buy me whiskey, they should at least ask the guy at the store for a recommendation...I don't know any salesman who's gonna recommend JB White. HipFlask
While I agree that any whiskey received is great gift for christmas. It's the thought that counts. Heck if someone gives me a bottle of Jack Daniels thinking it's bourbon I'm trilled. But I do believe that the listed whiskies in the article are rather Ho Ho Ho Hum. Most are what I would consider everyday pours. The point being that the newspaper could have come up with a much better list of bourbon's to be given as gifts. Like the previously mentioned Four Roses (NY paper) and WT American Spirit.
BourbonJoe
I never get bourbon for Christmas unless I buy it. Every year I get a great bourbon on Christmas day and the tag reads "To Joe from Joe". Joe :usflag:
