George Dickel Barrel Select

I just saw GD BS (now that's an odd acronym) at the store. Any recommendations?

If you like George, pick it up. I find this bottling needs a little time to open up, but is nice otherwise. Surprisingly lightly wooded for this age.

An excellent whiskey, in my opinion. In fact, my favorite Tennessee whiskey, with GD #12 not far behind. I have yet to sit down and taste GD BS and JD Silver Select or SB side-by-side, but I suspect George's Select will come out ahead of Jack's Silver.

I like it, bought it for the novelty as much as anything else. But at 86 proof I feel a bit slighted by the producers. I mean if you're going to double the price at least make it 100 proof. Guess they had to cut costs somehow to pay for that pretty bottle and cork.

Smooth and delicious. What else can I say? I just found my first bottle of this stuff and am having my first pour as I type this. Dickel's always had that Budweiser trait, drinkability, down cold, and the BS version is, well, no BS. If you like Dickel, you'll love this. A little less pronounced "chocksiness" that is the hallmark of classic Dickel, and that's probably a good thing for neophytes to the brand. Is it worth twice the price of the No. 12? Probably not, but I'm willing to go along with the conceit - hand selected barrels of the best Tennesee whiskey known to man.

I think I'll pour me another!

Sadly both my bottles from Binnys had what can only be described as a medicinal 'taint' to them.

I thought it was just that they weren't to my liking, but when I gave my bottles to someone who had purchased BS (from Binnys) a few months earlier, they confirmed the 'taint'.

At over $100 a bottle each (to land them in Australia), I won't be buying it again. I still have an unopenned bottle of ordinary Dickel - I hope it tastes ok :skep:

That may be the "chocksiness" I referred to in my earlier post. Chocks are a brand of kids vitamin here in the States. It is part of the flavor profile of the whiskey, and probably the taste imparted by the extra step of the Tennesee process, the charcoal mellowing. See if the Dickel No. 12 has the same flavor note. I bet it does.

But everyone's taste is different. I love Dickel - it's always been a regular pour of mine.

I had a side by side with barrel select second edition and no 12 on Friday. Both were very good but also rather different. No 12 was spicier and more robust wile BS was smother, fruiter and enormously elegant. Still from my memory I recall the first edition as even more elegant. I do consider all 3 as about equally good with the finish as the weak point on both the barrel select versions.

From your postings here, you obviously spend quite a bit of money with Binny's. Might I suggest letting them know about your tainted bottles and see if they would replace them? I'm betting they would make it right with nary a second thought...

I must admit, the amount of money you fellas have to lay out to get a bottle of Bourbon posted to Australia sure speaks volumes to your love of the spirit!
