Oh, I'll occasionally pick up a bottle of 107 Weller Antique, but thats about the only wheat version I keep on hand.Having said that the very best whiskey I've ever tasted was the archetypal wheat whiskey, the Very Very Old Fitzgerald made in the 50s and bottled in the 60s.I'm confident in my decisions here, firm in my convictions and will not be swayed by argument no matter how artful or well reasoned.Regards,Squire Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

However, what got me stared in bourbon was a wheater (PVW20). So, let the confusion begin.Let me say this, though, variety is the spice of life. If I had to choose one bourbon to drink the rest of my life, I really couldn't choose. If I did, in a month's time, I'd be sick of that bourbon. Just like my favorite food, beer, etc.I love variety. I have made friends with quite a few bourbons though, but I can't say I have a preference for any one type of bourbon. My favorite bottlings run the gamut of rye mash, high rye, low rye and wheaters. I’m not knocking the rye recipe bourbons, several are among my favorites, but I'm starting to think I prefer straight rye to rye recipe bourbon (but not to wheat recipe bourbon). I have a special fondness for Stitzel-Weller, wheated bourbon, but not universally -- I haven't found a Cabin Still bottle that I care to drink from a second time. My favorite "Pappy 23" is the Lawrenceburg 1999 issue -- which was bottled from rye-recipe bourbon. I love Wild Turkey 12yo and Kentucky Spirit, notable rye 'monsters'. OscarV Posted November 28, 2007 Share Posted November 28, 2007 I would have to say a rye based bourbon.Beacuse there are more of them and my favorites are old age statement bottles of Wild Turkeys and Single Barrels of Four Roses.But I like wheat based bourbons such as some Pappys, Old Rips and assorted Wellers better than straight rye whiskey. What turned me on to Bourbon was PVW20. And, right now, I have no interest in PVW20. I find it very one-dimensional and dissapointing especially for the $75 I spent for it (which I do realize is a great price).I have been a broken record with PVW20 the past few days but I just can't hide my feelings toward it. And since there are more rye bourbons than wheaters I would say rye bourbon in direct proportion to the number of wheaters. What that means is I like them equally. So now I will go have another pour of Old Forester Signature hmm is that a wheater or a rye?Flash puppy you need to try VWFRR 13yr. You truely haven't had straight rye if you haven't.
