Are you a wheater or a rye?

For me, currently anyway, I'm liking the ryed bourbons and rye, in general. Hopefully, that changes with the arrival of my PVW15's!:skep:

For my own use everything I buy nowadays is a rye recipe. Oh, I'll occasionally pick up a bottle of 107 Weller Antique, but thats about the only wheat version I keep on hand.

Having said that the very best whiskey I've ever tasted was the archetypal wheat whiskey, the Very Very Old Fitzgerald made in the 50s and bottled in the 60s.

I'm confident in my decisions here, firm in my convictions and will not be swayed by argument no matter how artful or well reasoned.

Regards,

Squire

After having many of each, I have concluded that I lean toward the wheaters, especially the good ones.

To answer my own question, I haven't a clue. Currently, I like the rye'd bourbons. However, what got me stared in bourbon was a wheater (PVW20). So, let the confusion begin.

Let me say this, though, variety is the spice of life. If I had to choose one bourbon to drink the rest of my life, I really couldn't choose. If I did, in a month's time, I'd be sick of that bourbon. Just like my favorite food, beer, etc.

I love variety. Right now, I guess I'm a rye guy but that will certainly change.

My true passion is Straight Rye. I have made friends with quite a few bourbons though, but I can't say I have a preference for any one type of bourbon. My favorite bottlings run the gamut of rye mash, high rye, low rye and wheaters.

I definitely prefer wheat recipe to rye recipe. I’m not knocking the rye recipe bourbons, several are among my favorites, but I'm starting to think I prefer straight rye to rye recipe bourbon (but not to wheat recipe bourbon).

I hope to claim that I have experienced fabulous bourbons/whiskeys in every form (including -- Heavens!-- Scotch), from rye-recipe to wheated, straight rye and, even, barley (Irish and 'that other place'). I have a special fondness for Stitzel-Weller, wheated bourbon, but not universally -- I haven't found a Cabin Still bottle that I care to drink from a second time. My favorite "Pappy 23" is the Lawrenceburg 1999 issue -- which was bottled from rye-recipe bourbon. I love Wild Turkey 12yo and Kentucky Spirit, notable rye 'monsters'. Best bourbon I've ever had was a '40s-era, wheated Weller.

Best I can answer, thus, is that I like what I like.

I had no idea there was a rye'd PVW 23. Shocking, it is.

Ut oh, Yoda, I am talking like. Too many drinks, I have to tonight.

I'm a rye guy and always have WT products on hand. Yet, ORVW 10 is my current favorite. Go figure...

Just to help you out, the original PVW 20yo was rye mash as well.

What is this world coming to?!

Dang, I wish I had tried that! I probably would have liked it a lot better than the current PVW's.

Is the PVW15 a SW or Bernheim, do you happen to know?

Depending on the duration and intensity of the tasting, I am likely to wobble in all directions.

I would have to say a rye based bourbon.

Beacuse there are more of them and my favorites are old age statement bottles of Wild Turkeys and Single Barrels of Four Roses.

But I like wheat based bourbons such as some Pappys, Old Rips and assorted Wellers better than straight rye whiskey.

Lots of folks making "my" comments:

- Wheat recipe over straight rye over rye recipe

- Older S-W the best

- Four Roses the rye recipe exception

Tim: was that Weller the eBay bottle we tangled over a couple years ago? (If so, I'm even more jealous...)

Gentlemen, The Rep. from The Great State of Mississippi cast one vote for RYE.

but wheat is ok if no one is looking.

I am definitely a rye bourbon kind of guy. I have had a few very good wheaters, e.g., Pappy 20-year old, but on the whole, I much prefer the rye-based bourbons.

To my knowledge, I have never had a straight rye whiskey.

Oh, really? Well, then maybe I have never had an excellent wheater.

Mighta been -- I don't remember clearly. I've managed to own 2 or 3. None have been bad.

I have pondered this question quite a bit. I really like SW stuff. Particularly SW 12-15 years old. As for the rest of the wheaters, I have had some very nice ones but just not the same. I am a huge WT fanatic, which just have a huge amount of rye, however, I do not like straight rye whiskey. At all. I have had some good ones to (handy, saz, willet), just can't dig 'em.

So my answer is: I don't know.

It's funny. I got into bourbon through Scotch. I currently have no interest in the stuff. What turned me on to Bourbon was PVW20. And, right now, I have no interest in PVW20. I find it very one-dimensional and dissapointing especially for the $75 I spent for it (which I do realize is a great price).

I have been a broken record with PVW20 the past few days but I just can't hide my feelings toward it. Tonight, I have been swilling some Weller Antique and I would take this stuff over PVW20 in a heart beat.

I really do like straight rye. And since there are more rye bourbons than wheaters I would say rye bourbon in direct proportion to the number of wheaters. What that means is I like them equally. So now I will go have another pour of Old Forester Signature hmm is that a wheater or a rye?

Flash puppy you need to try VWFRR 13yr. You truely haven't had straight rye if you haven't.

I had/have several very early bottlings of the VWFRR. I have also tried the Vw 12yr "old time" rye. nope. no dice.
