I have located 17 bottles of Pappy 23 yr old, priced at $180. Any advice on examining these bottles?

I don't know, but at that price, buy them all.

See if the glass on any of them is tinted green. iirc if the glass is green then it's from the first release and there is rye recipe bourbon inside rather than the typical wheat.

In addition to 'green tinted glass' bottles, look for any with Lawrenceburg on the label vs Frankfort.

Get any and all with green glass and/or Lawrenceburg labels.

And then sell one to me :grin::grin:

Hey Greg:

What liquor store was that in St. Louis where you found the 23?

Thanks

Julian

So you can sign them for us, right? :lol:

Thank you everyone for the guidance.

These all say Frankfurt on the label, clear glass.

The fun is in the hunt, right?

Have you had Pappy 23? Do you like it?

If you answered "yes" to both these questions, buy as many as you can justify.

If you answered "no" to the first, then you should consider picking one up to try, then buy more depending on your reaction to the second question.

Must be a bourbon loving owner at that store. I've never seen more than two Pappy 23's on the shelf at a store :bigeyes::bigeyes:

Why do I suspect these might be the last THIS STORE ever sees?

Hi Mike (Docholiday) -- Most all with foil tops, one with a wax top. What's the difference?

Hi Timothy (Empty Glass) and Bar Turtle --- It’s been a long time since I had ever even tasted any of the Pappy 23, so I will take your advice and buy as much as I can.

Hi Luv2Hunt -- Why does it say “bad girl†under your name? And yes, the store manager is a bourbon maniac, lucky for me.

Hi Tim (TNbourbon) – What are you suggesting? Another reason for me to snag all of ‘em?

Regards to all –

Gregg

  • The foil top is the most recent edition. If the wax-top is pre-letter-prefix, it's the 2003 bottling, and second (or fourth or fifth, I guess:cool: ) only to the original 1999 (rye-recipe) and the SB.com single-barrels, in my opinion;
  • Re:Timothy -- it's price-y whiskey, no doubt about it. Them that can, should;
  • Dawn's 'bad girl' designation is a fantasy -- she's sweeter than pecan pie! But, she does have a tart tongue...:skep:
  • I'm suggesting that Julian doesn't appreciate retailers underselling the going rate. While we all admire his palate and general bourbon acumen, we also must realize he's sometimes 'on the other side' -- bourbon is his vocation, vs. our avocation. We admire and appreciate him anyway.:grin:

As far as under-selling goes, I know that I can get 4 cases of PVW23 for $100 per bottle. If I were to buy less than the case, it would be $110.

You should to that -- before Julian read this!

You should do that -- before Julian reads this! And then mark it up $10 a bottle:grin: to SB.com denizens.

I know at least one guy here is interested in one bottle. The last I spoke of the the retailers, it was still available. That was only one week ago so I'm sure I'm more than good. Especially given the fact that I'm surrounded by non-bourbon drinking people. What I don't know is how old the bottles are. I do know that they are a mix of gold wax and foil but don't know the ratio or the years.

I've tried the Pappy 23 (wasn't aware of different bottlings, so I don't know which one I had) and I actually prefer the 20 year.

The wood tannings of the 23 are off-putting to me.

My advice: If possible, try before you buy. See if there's a bar or restaurant which has it, and try a little bit and see how you like it.
