...in the current offering of Old Fitz BIB (DSP 31, bottled at DSP 1)?

In order for it to be BIB, I realize that the bourbon has to be at least 4 years old and at least 100 proof.

Based on my tasting it last night, my guess is it's older than four years. Just a hunch. Anyone know?

Thanks,

Mark

Just to correct, the bourbon in the bottle must be at least 4 years old and exactly 100 proof.

Also, I think you have your DSPs backwards. The current is distilled at 1, bottled at 31.

As far as to how old it is, if I were a bettin' man, I would venture to guess it's not much over 4yo if it's over at all. Considering the pricing is in line with many other 4yo bonds, I'd say it is a 4yo bond as well.

The current DSP-1 OFBIB is not significantly more than four years old. That's a taste assessment, not inside information.

I'm drinking it right now. Likey.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the input.

And, you're both right, I had the DSP's backward.

My tastebuds are not nearly as mature as either of yours I'm sure, so I guess it's not much beyond four years but it's some darn fine bourbon.

What date is stamped into the glass on the bottom of the bottles that y'all are drinking from?

I ask because I have bottles of OF BIB from DSP1/31 from 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, & 2006.

So far I have only tasted the 2001, 2005, and 2006.

The 2001 is outstanding, absolutely love it! After tasting it I went back the next day and bought all the other bottles from the same shipment.

Unfortunately, I didn't like the 2005 at all, and found the 2006 to be even worse (too bad because I know where tons of these from '06 are). I suppose that it could just be the batch that these particular bottles came from, but I don't even want to risk buying any more.

I have yet to try any of the 2002, 2003, & 2004 bottles that I have. And I only have one bottle each with these dates, so no biggie if I don't like them (didn't pay over $13 for any of them).

I hope I didn't offend anyone's tastes here, maybe I just got some from not-so-good batches dated '05 & '06. But wanted to alert anyone that I did experience a drastic change between the 2001 bottles I adore and the 2005 & 2006 bottles that were not good. These were all from DSP's 1/31.

When I empty some bottles (so many open right now), I'll get around to trying the '02, '03, & '04 and see how they compare.

Anyone else experience a change in taste of the OFBIB like I did between these dates (2001 and '05/'06)?

Old Fitz products aren't marketed very widely in my area, but I've been following this on the forum because I'm intrigued by how the UD Bernheim wheater would be reinterpreted as production shifted to BT and HH Bernheim.

Sadly, it looks like the 2001 you love would be UD and the 2005 you don't is some of the first of HH distillate and aging.

I'll be very interested to see how the next few years go, as Parker and Craig refine how they want their dog to taste - and how the warehouse managers (we never seem to see their names publicized even though perhaps 80% of the character develops under their care) in Bardstown choose to age the barrels.

Gus, I checked my OF BIB and it's '04. Though I'm not sure how it rates compared to you '01, it's quite good and worthy of my recommending it to you.

I'll be on the look out for the '01.

If you do crack open your '04, please let me know how you like it.

Regards,

Mark

Well, upon reading this I just had to crack open my lone bottle from '04 and try it. I do find it to be better than the '05/'06, but IMO it's still not near as good as the '01, though it is still very drinkable and I believe it will get even better after the bottle has had more time to breathe since it's now been opened (admittedly, the '05 & '06 did improve after being open for a good while, but sadly it didn't improve enough to convince me that it was worth buying again). On the other hand, the '01 was outstanding from the moment I opened it, and I regard it as some of the best OFBIB I've ever had (should I even dare to say that it compares with the OFBIB from Stitzel-Weller?). Ahhh, I'm starting to digress.

Anyway, with these more recent bottlings, I just can't put my finger on it (I'm terrible at trying to pick out and discern any specific 'flavors' in the whiskey when I drink it), but there's a strange taste that's putting me off, and it seems to me that the more current the bottling the more prominent is that weird taste that I'm not liking. Yet this 'off taste' that I'm referring to is totally absent in the '01. Makes me want to crack open my '02 & '03 bottles and further explore the progression over the time-line. But it'll have to wait for now.

And to those reading what I have written here....please don't let any of my comments discourage you from buying a bottle and trying it for yourself to see if you like it. I'm still pretty new to the world of bourbon, and I'm liking a wider variety of brands than I did just a few months ago. Plus there's also a good chance I just don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

Nice post, Gus. Now I've got to find an '01!!!! One day older and deeper in debt. :D

Everyone's tastes are different and I too have a difficult time breaking down individual flavors. All I know is if I like it or not.
