I have found that if I put soda like seven up in bourbon, then I tend to drink a lot of bourbon.

If I drink it with Ice I drink more.

If I drink it straight, I tend to drink less.

Do you find this true too?

yeah straight is the way to go if you want to drink less. Unless you are doing shooters with the guys. I can throw back some mix drinks. My favorite way to drink bourbon is with a little ice but I do drink more than having it neat.

I prefer my Bourbon neat. That is whiskey in a glass period. Sometimes with a water/beer back or mixed with water/ice. But I do tend to drink less whiskey as compared to mixed drinks. A bottle will empty faster. My wife only mixes usually with 7up or Ginger Ale and she puts a bigger dent in the bottle. I think her intent is to catch buzz or party time where as I am taking in all the flavor, heat, finish and smell the whiskey has to offer. This might also explain why most bars have 20 differnt bottles of Vodka while they only have JB white and Makers Mark for bourbon. People are drinking for differnt reasons. Thankfully my wife doesn't drink very often. She gave me a bottle of George T for my birthday and it broke my heart everytime she mixed it. But then again better whiskey makes for a better drink.

With ice, about a third of the way into my drink, it becomes a race against over-dilution. Therefore, I tend to drink more. (I generally don't do mixed drinks.) If I drink bourbon neat, there's no pressure from temperature change or dilution. Therefore, I tend to drink less. Um, unless it tastes really good... like the OC 12 yo I had last night. I drank a lot of that.

When drinking neat I consume the least. Mixed drinks I consume the most, especially if I'm out at a party or a bar and I don't have to worry about driving. The last time such was the case was at my wife's twentieth High School reunion. We had a hotel room and the party was in the hotel bar.

I definitely drink less if the drinks are neat. Case in point: New Year's Eve.

I went to the party with an "unopened 750" of WT rye and drank it over a couple cubes of ice most of the night. I arrived home with an "open 450" of WT rye...No way I drink 300 mL of rye if I drink it neat.

As for mixed drinks, I don't care for most of them and don't drink them.

I almost always drink neat, but I did drop a small ice chip in a glass of saz 18 the other night and it seemed to open up a lot without dilluting it too much.

No, I have one or two (usually one) drinks no matter how I am serving it.

Absolut(ly). If I'm drinking any liquor on the rocks, or mixed, then I tend to drink more in the same order as you. Each week, I taste a lot of different bourbons, but not to wretched excess. But the last time I mixed (vodka) martinis...well, hell, I can't remember the particulars. :slappin:

On the rocks or with Coke/soda/water doesn't necessarily result in me drinking more than neat. However, my weakness when it comes to excess seems to be Manhattans. I can control myself even if I have a couple, and it's been a couple of years or more since I've been really gone (and that was...accidental?), but I will put away Manhattans (or related variants) like nobody's business. So, they are reserved for weekends (and not every weekend). Oddly, with other cocktails that I drink "up" (i.e. Martinis, Margaritas, Negronis, etc.), I don't ever feel compelled to overindulge.
