The Evan Williams labels...

Okay, so I just got done checking out the Evan Williams website.

The regular black label, even NSA, is a bourbon I know and love.

Apparently, there are also a White Label, a Green Label, a Blue Label (not in the US) and a Red Label (also not in the U.S.).

I've noticed the Blue Label's bottle shape is suspiciously-similar to the bottle shape of the Single Barrel...

Does anyone know what the differences are? The website says absolutely NOTHING about them...

Black: NAS (was 7yo), 86pf

White: BIB, 100pf

Green: NAS (was 8yo then 4yo?) 80pf

Red: 12yo 101pf (export-only)

Maroon: 15yo 101pf (export-only)

Blue: 23yo 107pf (export-only -- yes, it's now the same bottle as EWSB; didn't used to be)

1783: NAS? (was 10yo), 86pf

Master Distillers Select (jug): 7yo, 90pf

Although the 23 yr is export only, I believe you can purchase it at HH's Bourbon Heritage Center for an obscene amount of money.

It's an obscene amount of money overseas, too -- usually above US$200 in local currency.

I've had it in bars (at a more reasonable per-shot price) and find it too dominated by char.

Found a link to a picture of what the EW23 bottle/label used to look like until a couple years back (the 15yo maroon label overseas is in the same wine-shaped bottle.)

The EW green is available in 4 and 6. Although, I've seen it bottled at 8 years, it's been awhile, a sure dusty find for sure. EW green (current) is also available in BIB, in the 200 ml size.

The EW 23 is currently bottled in the EWSB style bottle. The picture you have with the old label (letter from George Shapira on the front) is the "standard" HH style bottle (still used as our everyday bottle). We used that style for EW 23 in the mid 90's. There is another older bottling of the EW 23. That style bottle had a shoulder on it to accept "colars". I posted a picture of this bottle with Marvin Franz and Max shaking hands :grin: :grin:

The EW black has been bottled in 5, 6, 7, and 8 year. There were many rules to follow. The 5 year usually went to California, no age statement, sour mash collar, with a extra drink. Why? I don't have a clue. The extra drink thing is simply: the top number of a legal fill without being over. With legal fills you have a window of 4 points over the legal number and four points under the legal. That bottling was supposed to be 4 over the legal, no exceptions. It's been years since we've done that.

The EW red is also available in 15 year also.

Are there intended to be flavor profile differences between the black and green labels, or white and green in the case of BIB? (I've often wondered the same about the differences between JD black and green labels, but don't care enough for the stuff to find out myself. In the EW case, the only stock available to me locally is the black label -- and I've bunkered all of the 7-year age statement bottles that I can find!)

I know that we have flavor profiles for each product :grin::grin: I guess Parker and Craig would be the one to ask for a profile of each bottling.

Bettye Jo isn't kidding about the work she does....that bottling facility is a mechanics wetdream. There are bottles, booze and forklifts flying around that place like spaceships fly around George Jettson. It is hard to comprehend how much activity is really going on at the HH facility. They have something like 8 bottling lines all going at the same time. They handle almost every brand that HH owns....from bourbon to vodka, gin and everything under the sun.

I am not sure how Bettye Jo can keep up with all the labels that HH owns. I saw their label books and was thoroughly blown away. They are about the size of the biggest dictionary that you have ever seen. One for exports only and the other two I saw were variations of US labels. Seriously, it was probably the coolist single item that I saw on all my distillery trips. If she would have let me....I would have parked myself infront of those label books for hours. Thanks again for the tour.

One of the first bourbons I ever bought and drank was a white label 8 years EW that I bought from our governor store many, many years ago. I think it was 86 or 90 proof. I do recall liking it very much at the time.
