There is a store called Lanelle's (spelling might be off) that should be able to help you with your task. IIRC, it is in NYC.

Hard to spend $300 on a single bottle of current-production bourbon. The only one I know that tops $200 is Pappy 23 (Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 23yo, formally).

Yes, try LeNell's:

in the Red Hook area of Brooklyn.

Well, if you were shopping for me...

I'd say look for a bottle of Hirsch, a bottle of George Stagg, and a bottle of Pappy Van Winkel 20 year old. Those are three very nice bourbons that are all around the $100 range and you DID say trio. That would be some gift!

Or you could land one bottle of Pappy Van Winkel 23 year old, a bottle of Bookers, and a bottle of Elijah Craig 18 year old. That would also get you three very nice bourbons around $300. The PVW23 is around $230, the EC18 is around $40 these days, and the Bookers is usually about $45.

The bookers is a very high proof bourbon, as is the stagg (get the latter if you can find it!), known as barrel proof. This lets you (er, him) taste the bourbon as it tastes when it comes out of the barrel.

Hey there.

All good suggestions, but I'd actually suggest the Vintage bourbons and ryes. These are really outstanding whiskeys, along with the Pappy van Winkle 15yr bourbon and 13yr rye. That said, if you can get your hands on a bottle of the 23 - you'll be doing yourself a great, great favor, as it is my favorite bourbon that I have ever had the pleasure of tasting.

The Thomas H. Handy is rather tasty, along with the Rittenhouse 23yr rye.

And, if you really want something special, I'd suggest you find a bottle of the Red Hook rye.

Enjoy.

You will probably get enough suggestions here to boggle your mind. Do you know if your S.O. prefers a certain brand/type? Does he have a favorite? Might shed some light on what would be best to suggest.

Thank you, and good luck on your shopping. You have received good advice.

I am going to show your post to my wife, she is very competetive when it comes to gift buying.

thanks for the great advice!!

last time thanks to your great advice i got the pappy 20 (he liked) aj hirsh (he really liked) and a bottle of wild turkey tribute (he thought was OK)...he is a woodford reserve guy himself

this time...i'm going to look for the pappy 23 for starters and probably just make it a duo instead of a trio..let's be honest, he only has 2 hands anyway

thanks again for the time and suggestions...you guys are the best and feel free to share my posts with your loving wives...if they really love you they will jump at the chance to buy you a nice bottle or two being it means so much to you all and just like a women with never having enough high heel shoes a man can never have too many bottles of bourbon :)

i'm a scotch drinker myself and about ready to pour myself a nice one

cheers

If he likes Woodford, you might want to seek out the Old Forester Birthday Bourbon -- quite a bit cheaper than the Pappy 23, but a memorable bottle and always interesting contents.

For sure Pappy 20 ($90 around here); I like it more than the 23.

Wild Turkey American Spirit at around $100. Comes in a nice box, too.

Haven't tried it, but if you're into spending, then the Kentucky Vintage Rye might be good; I saw it at Sam's for about $120.

Other treats: Stagg, Hirsch.

Good luck! Should be a great gift.

Yeah, but you're lucky to find that one for $200 except in Kentucky just after the semi-annual disbursement.

A great suggestion.

In terms of suggestions, maybe think about a rye? At Lenell's, she has her own 'Red Hook Rye' which is really, really tasty to say the least and a bargain to boot.

Here's Jamie's take on it:

http://spiritsandcocktails.wordpress.com/2007/08/09/red-hook-rye/

Next to that, I'd suggest the Thomas Handy rye, or the Vintage 23 year rye.

BUT! That all said, a bottle of the Pappy Van Winkle 15 year really is the prize. The 23 year is the best bourbon that I have had the pleasure to sip, but it's almost too decadent to really enjoy drinking, since each pour results in a worrying drop in the level of the whiskey in the bottle which takes away from the enjoyment in my opinion.

But, the 15? Drink and enjoy.
