jbaker
Hello everyone! My first post, so please excuse me if this has been asked. I looked through the posts and online and can't seem to figure out who is producing the current Michter's US 1 Bourbon, US1 Rye, US1 American Whiskey and Straight Rye 10 year. Does anyone know who's distilling this/owns the brand? Thanks!
StraightBoston
Welcome! The Michter's label is owned by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (KBD) who purchase bulk whiskey from other distilleries. The historical Michter's was a long-shuttered Pennsylvania distillery famous for its King Tut mask decanters and what are now the A.H. Hirsch 16- and 20-year-old bourbons. I've tasted a (current) Michter's single barrel that was one of my favorite shots, and another that was only so-so. (Your mileage may vary: My all-time favorite bourbon is Black Maple Hill 21-year-old, and my all-time least favorite is Corner Creek -- both of which are bottled by KBD.)Where in Boston? jbaker
Where in Boston? Thanks for the help! It's been driving me nuts!I'm a fan of some of the BMH stuff, but I haven't tasted all the bottlings. It seems like there's a never ending combination of proofs and ages from that line and they're all just a different color ink.I live in Dorchester, but I work for Wine Gallery in Kenmore Square. Stop by if you like. To my work, that is. I try to make sure to have a nice sampling of bourbons on stock and am working on upping the ante. (I have the BMH 95 proof - no age date - currently.) barturtle
Actually, while Mitcher's may be bottled by KBD, the brand is owned by Chatham Imports.
cowdery
Chatham created the whole "US1" moniker. That was never something Michter's used. Nor is the packaging or anything else based on anything Michter's did. Chatham appropriated the name and they are telling the Michter's story, although they are careful never to say that anything they sell was made at the Michter's Distillery in Pennsylvania, because it wasn't, but they clearly hope people will reach that conclusion on their own.Again, this is one of those caveat emptor deals. How they can rationalize even using the name and repeating the history as if it has anything to do with the current operation is beyond me.
