McCarthey Single Malt Whiskey

I really didn't care for this stuff. It's smoky, but not in a peaty way...more of a burnt, carbony smoke that was none to pleasing.

Funny, you are right about the spelling, but I got this from Binnys, where I purchased the bottle. Thanks for your feedback SKU...What do you mean by smoky, without being peaty? I assume you mean that is smoking without the medicinal or maritine quality that some of the Islays have? Some of the Speysides that are moderatly peated (old Glengarioch, Glen Mhor, some Macallan, ect), are smoky without that "other" quality. I enjoy both, but do find them distinct.

Well, it's definitely not medicinal. Like I said, it's more of a carbony, burnt taste, like malt got stuck on the bottom of the pan. :smiley_acbt:

I associate peat more with the smell of campfire or the char of the grill. This had carbon, but more of a burnt than smoky character.

Well, I am having a bit now. Blind, I would have thought it a young Bowmore, or perhaps Caol Ila. The peat is at the front end of the nose, with something almost vanilla like, and then furature polish, or some other solvent (in a good way). The mouth is simple (what do you want from a 3 year old), peat, a hint of sweetness, almost like a single malt rye from Anchor.)..Finish is not very long, a hint bitter. First impression? I rather like it. I would think its closest, easily found comparision would be Bowmore Legend, or Mcllendan's Islay (usually a very young Bowmore). Would love to see what this is like at 8 years old. I would actually say it is fairly peaty, and even does have some bandaid type notes of Laphroig, IMHO.
