jbaker
A good topic. I wish I knew more readily which were which. I was going to propose a forum to delineate which current recipes fall into which category. Maybe I should start that? Or is there something already out there? Since wheat is my favorite kind of bourbon I'll say that the ones at the bottom of my list aren't as bad as their position would imply. Where I ranking all of the bourbon I tried I think that most of these would be in the top 50%. Isn't there a W.L. Weller 19 from the BTAC's of years past? I distinctly remember reading that here on SB.com shortly after passing over some RY in a store, not realizing it was a wheater. An interesting and enlightening thread, for those of us who are still in the early stages of our journey through the wide world of bourbon ...Larry
Gillman
Just for information purposes, www.asmithbowman.com states that VG is made from "corn, rye and malted barley".Gary
doubleblank
Also, just for information purposes, Julian did many other bottlings not yet mentioned using wheated bourbon that are no longer produced. I have an Old Rip 12yo/105 proof that is excellent. Then there's the Blue Smoke 18yo, Berghoff 14yo, etc etc.Julian brought one of his unique bottlings, his personal favorite, to the Gazebo and shared it with us several years ago. It was a 14yo (or 16yo) from early '70's SW bourbon. Most of us concured, it was at or near the top of the best SW whiskeys we had ever tasted. It would be difficult (impossible?) to make a complete list of all wheated bourbon bottlings if we include these out of production examples.Randy
Gillman
Randy's modesty prevents him from mentioning "Van Blankle", a single barrel bottling of Lot "B" he commissioned and kindly gifted to all who asked. And it's a fine whiskey to boot.Gary

Don't know which one to buy.....BTAC is an acronym for Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. It is a collection of bourbon that is put out usually every fall by BT. It consists of Sazerac Rye, Thomas Handy Rye, Eagle Rare and George T. Stagg. As for Old Fitz, the BIB would be more since the proof is 100. I've never tried the 1849 myself. But my suggestion is to buy the BIB. I have a current bottle and it's a good wheated bourbon. A one liter bottle cost me $19.99, I believe. At $35 for ORVW 10/107, that's more than steep. More like highway robbery. Here in CT, the highest I've seen it is $29.99. The lowest, $25.49. The store that had the latter price, I purchased four bottles. However, if you haven't tried it then, in my opinion, you've got to try it once. After that, if it's the same price, I'd say pass. But, it is better than the Antique. Those two are my every day pours, if ever I had one.P.S. I agree with you that the 15 is better than the 20. This is just my opinion but I think the 10/107 is better than the 20.
