leebo
Saw a new bottle of this on the shelf today. Black label and a simlilar but different shape as the weller antique bottle. Is this new to the market? Anyone have some tasting notes on it? Priced at 40$.
scopenut
No, Weller 12 has been around for awhile. It's my favorite everyday pour, since it's available here for $23. At $40, I think I would pass, but it's still a great bourbon.-Kevin
TNbourbon
Weller 12yo was created by Buffalo Trace when they acquired the Weller brand -- c. 1998, I think. It originally was bottled identically -- except, of course, for the labeling (which was still similar) to the Weller Special Reserve -- but the bottle was updated to the semi-potstill shape 12-18 months or so ago. TBoner
Since we're on the subject, I finished off the night by cracking a bottle from early in the history of this bottling. Damn! Do we know if/for how long any S-W would have been included in Weller 12? This is rich with the classic cotton candy of S-W, and there's a nice Cracker Jack note on the finish, too. I don't have the palate that many of you do, but from what I can tell, this 1999 bottling is either Stitzel-Weller or the next best thing. Input, gents? TNbourbon
Well, Tim -- as recently as 2005, we were selecting 12+-year-old bourbon for single-barrel bottling, and BT reportedly was still using occasional barrels in the 12yo blend. Probably never was exclusively S-W, though...
TBoner
Yeah, I knew there were the single-barrel offerings, but I wasn't sure if they were representative of the sort of barrels that typically went into Weller 12. Perhaps I've lucked out with this bottle, stumbling into a S-W-heavy batch. What a happy discovery...
cigarnv
Great bourbon and a great value.... I volly back and forth between the 12 and Antique..... siblings but quite different....both great pours for the $$$
doubleblank
Those SW barrels we purchased and had bottled as Weller 12 yo (four different barrels) had already been selected to be sold as Weller 12. I believe they just rolled out six barrels from their pool of "Weller 12" SW barrels. So I believe they are representative of the SW whiskey BT was using in their standard Weller 12. FYI, by the time the barrels got bottled they were closer to 13 1/2 years old.Randy
cowdery
When BT does a single barrel bottling for a customer of a brand such as Weller 12 or Elmer T. Lee, they give the customer several barrels from which to choose, all of which already have been selected as suitable for that expression of the brand. It is some great stuff for $25 or less but certainly not $40. At $40, that is approaching "Pappy" territory which IMHO is hands-down better than any of the Weller bottlings (except perhaps WLW Antique 06) anytime, anywhere. Old Lamplighter
Thanks for the info,I may shop around for price.Best of luck to you. Hopefully, you will find one in the lower $$ ranges. It is quite good for the right price. I will go so far to say that it is one of the best bargains in bourbon for <$20 and a still a very good buy for $20-25. drunkenjayhawk
I just purchased a 12 yo W. L. Weller for 24 or 25 dollars one liter size at my favortie liquor store this week. I thought I had heard it was to be discontinued by BT , if so I will pickup a couple more bottles or more.

OscarV
I agree but they have already made two super huge mistakes by dropping Weller Centennial and Eagle Rare 101.But I am basing that on taste not their profit margins.

The Weller Antique 107 is not going away! You've got to think positive and affirm that.Okay everybody, sit on floor, cross-legged. Wrists on knees, thumb touching middle finger, and repeat:"Oom-padme-nae, Weller Antique ain't goin' away. Oom-padme-nae, Weller Antique ain't going away."(No Gus, I'm not making fun of you. It's just that in my experience very few things have happened just because I wanted them to)BT would be making a HUGE mistake if they discontinued the Weller Antique 107!For us, yes. For them, not necessarily. As for me, I'll be stocking up on it. If nothing else, it'll save me some bucks, because the one thing we can be absolutely sure of is that if it does stay on the market, the price will be going up. cowdery
Just to clear the air on this, I have no inside information and there have been zero inklings from BT about Antique going away. I have heard nothing. The speculation is entirely my own, a little tea-leaf reading, but it's 100% based on observing certain patterns, not on anything I've heard. No one has dropped any hints. Nothing. My analysis is simply that BT has inherited a proliferation of brands and a proliferation of expressions within those brands, to which it has added a couple (such as Weller 12) that it thought better expressed what it wanted to do with the line. Dropping Centennial was a no-brainer. Antique would be a harder cut. Since Antique is the same age as Special Reserve, which has long been the flagship of the Weller line, the reason for its existence is the higher proof. In this era of tight supplies, high proof brands at value prices may (note may) be a luxury BT feels it no longer can afford. But, as I said, that's just my speculation. If you want to worry about something, worry about the doubling of the price of Special Reserve upon its introduction to Ohio.
