Men who ate at least four servings of vegetables and drank at least two alcoholic beverages daily were less likely to develop benign prostate hyperplasia than those who ate or drank less than those amounts per day, researchers found in a seven-year study. The study also suggests that the risk of BPH increases in men who eat red meat every day. More

Got the alcohol part down but the red meat cancels that out for me. Guess I should drink more?

Difficult to calculate my risk. Considering how small modern serving seizes are, I probably eat at least five servings of vegetables (slathered in butter) a day, but I also eat at least a pound of meat a day and I don't drink everyday.

I guess I should drink more, but with the extra calories coming from alcohol, I'd have to cut down on the cookies and candy.

And I always thought vegetables were bad for you?! Dang that guy in the 10-gallon hat on PBS.

Some vegetables cause me to "seize" as well.....such as asparagus, cauliflower and brussel sprouts. To date, no bourbon has caused me to seize......now Scotch is a different story.

Maybe this is a testament to my stupidity or lack of detail, but I didn't notice it until Old Lamplighter mentioned it.

And, nobody here better reply to this post by saying, "Ill take the former for five-hundred, Alex."

I can always use a few more excuses to drink... check out Harvard's post

Ouch, the number of qualifiers and disclaimers in there hurt my head. I guess it's not supposed to be simple.

My body tolerates one drink/day very well, and two/day pretty well (depends on conditions). If I drink more I usually regret it (once the buzz has worn off). I think people should try to be more experienced in listening to their own body. It will do a pretty good job of moderating you if you let it.

Here's probably the best comprehensive report on all the studies that have been done on the benefits of alcohol.... Click here

I don't dispute any of this, but it doesn't change some facts, such as today's Medical Examiner's case who had a 426 mg/dL ethanol upon admission with no history of previous ethanol testing.

The key is moderation.

Indeed, moderation is the underlying point in all the studies. They all show that between 1 to 3 drinks a day can be very healthy while 5 or more can be disastrous in many ways. It's just amazing though all the health benefits one can achieve through moderate imbibing. It's good news for all of us who get a nasty look from the spouse each time we reach for the bottle. Now I can happily point to these studies and say "I drink to and for my health!"icon12.gif

The benefits are so pervasive that bourbon should really be covered by our medical insurance plans as preventive medicine!
