How much is too much?

The original question was how much can you drink without getting a hangover, not without getting drunk. I hate to admit it, but in my younger years I have been "falling down drunk" on more than one occasion. I normally drink neat with a large water chaser. I only remember one hangover, however. That came from drinking wine at a picnic. There was no water to drink, only wine. My body told me it needed water, but there was none to be had, so I drank more wine. The next morning I discovered what a hangover was. Since then I modified a rule taught to me in one of the survival schools I attended in the Air Force. "If you have no water, don't eat" was modified to include the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Works for me, but everyone is different.

I observe the "8oz of water for each serving of alcohol" rule and it has served me well. I rarely see any residual effect the day after.

A group of us went out after work earlier this week and I didn't feel like bloating out on draft beer, so I ordered a WT101 neat and a tall glass of water chaser to keep hydrated. One of my co-workers joked that my whiskey/water choice was less than manly. He was drinking a wheat beer with a slice of citrus in it (something that I also enjoy now and again) so when he said "What's this? Is that stuff too much for you so you need to wash it down?" and I quickly replied "...says the guy with the chunk of fruit floating in his beer."

I got the smile and the 'ok, you got me' nod.

When I attended Survival School at Stead AFB we spent a week in a POW camp. All of our guards were former POWs in Korea. The were not nice to us. After the initial interrogation we were put in solitary. The next day someone shoved a soup can under my door. It had a warm liquid in it that tasted like melted lard and salt, but I ate it. Later they filled my can with water and when they shoved it back under the door, it spilled (probably on purpose). I managed to set it up in time to get about 3 swallows. 3 days later I was seriously considering drinking my own urine. Consequently I do not eat or consume alcohol unless I have a supply of water available.

The 750 ml you said elsewhere, that you drank Saturday, might constitute "too much", in my book. :skep:

I would say if you wake up the next day with a headache and certainly if you puke you've had too much. backoff from that point!

A lot depends on your hidration level and your "other stuff" intake... lots of food and water over time whiel drinkning.... will be diffrent than not... Over a full day of drinking, eating and being marry, I am sure I could kill a bottle...

... in the evening over a couple ours... best to keep to a drink an hour... or less...

In general though, it has always been my phylosphy to drink less and drink better.... I like to savor the best stuff I can afford... and skip pounding cheap stuff.

I have thought long and hard about how to answer this question. The problem is it is difficult to give an accurate estimate on how much is "my limit". I have a tendency to freshen my drink many times, pouring just a bit at a time.

I belive this is a carry-over from the same habit with food. You see, I'm an only child and my Mom would set the table so that all three of us could reach everything. Passing stuff, other than the salt or the catchup wasn't necessary. I would take 'at least' little bit of everything (that was a house rule) but after that my appetite and personal choice guided my hand. When I got married and would have dinner with my in-laws I learned pretty damn quick that if you didn't get all you thought you might want you just might not get a second shot at it.

If I had to say, I'd say that any more than five or so ounces of 107 proof over a period of three hours would be over my limit. Any more and I'm gonna have a hang over the next day.

I haven't drank much for the last few weeks. But have lost about ten pounds. I am 5'7 and went from 185 to about 175 partially because I took sudafed while having a cold.

About a month ago, I went on a business trip to Kansas City and went into the Grocery Store and wanted a half pint of something good. I didn't want any of the half pints. I almost bought nips, and instead bought a pint of Bulleit. I was amazed that I drank the whole thing. Now normally I only have two drinks, and I don't know how many are in a pint, but I didn't get a headache or any stomach problems at all! But I did feel a little calmed...... I was amazed. For some reason, a few hit me worse sleepwise (I wake up at night) than a whole pint! The bulleit is awesome. I wonder why no headache?

I believe stomach problems from drinking come more from Beer and Wine than Whiskey.

my uncle used to tell me "When you can start to feel it, it's time to quit."

for some folks, when they begin to feel it is when they being to drink more in order to 'maintain' that feeling.

for me, i try to live by my uncle's suggestion. when i've disregarded those words is often when i end up feeling the effects the next day.

i'm 6'7, about 255, so it takes a little more for me to feel it.

this is a good thing, and a bad thing. :)

I am thinking that nicotine countereffects alcohol a little. I am sipping now with some Snus between my lip and gum and not feeling it. I also seem to remember when I used to drink a lot, I would go back to cigarettes and it would somehow stimulate me so I didn't feel so woozy.
