Last I knew the ORVW 15 was all "SW" so if you find grab it!!! But that's just me!

Supposedly, all ORVW 15 is SW whiskey. Having enjoyed some last night, I can guarantee you that regardless of the provenance, it is rare and outstanding whiskey. If you see a bottle, buy it. If you don't want it, you will have no problem finding someone who will.

I'd like to ask a follow up, if all the ORVW 15 are SW whiskey then how about it's replacement the PVW 15?

First couple of years was all SW. Now it is mixed BT and SW, still great! Don't shy away from the new version!

There's a bottle of the stuff on ebay right now... last time I checked it was up to about 75$ with 2 days left to bid.... I'd go for it if I wasn't so strapped for cash right now icon9.gif

Any ORVW 15 you find will be Stitzel-Weller because when he couldn't keep making it all SW, Julian stopped making the ORVW 15 altogether and created the more expensive Pappy 15. Then eventually he didn't have enough SW to supply the Pappy 15, so now the newer bottles of that have either Bernheim or BT whiskey in them. I haven't sampled a lot of Pappy 15, but I haven't heard anyone say it lost a step when it stopped being all SW.

At the same time as he discontinued the ORVW 15, the ORVW 10 became all Bernheim/BT, no SW. That's where you need to find older bottlings when the 10-year-old was all SW too. I don't remember when that was, but it wasn't too many years ago, maybe 2003 or 2004.

Years ago I saw it going away so I loaded up on all S-W Van Winkles. All the ORVW (both 10 and 15), Pappy 15 and Lot B's. I've tried them side by side with the new stuff and I can tell the difference. Thank God the bunker's stocked with the old stuff. I think at that time the ORVW 15-107's were selling for $27.00 and the 10-107's were selling for $17.00.

OK Joe....can I say that sucks! By the time I was looking....the 15/107's were scarce and the cheapest one I bought was $45! Jon preferred the 15 over the 10, so I never picked those up.

Had them both the other nite. The PWV 15 is good, the ORVW15 is the best of the VWs

I gotta agree with you there, Em. The PVW 15 is outstanding. I like it better than even the 20 or 23 yr. I think 15 is the sweet spot for that whiskey (although I'd love to try a 17 or 18yr if there were such a thing).

And as much as I love PVW, I gotta give the edge to S-W ORVW 15. But not by a lot.

I'm not sure how I would order my preferences between PVW 15 and S-W ORVW 10. Again, very close.

I had a line on some 15yr ORVW last summer, although they were $70 each plus shipping. Unfortunately, the deal fell through.
