Just can't Finish Bottles

There are two types here.. ones that you just can't finish because they just do not tickle your fancy... and the ones you just can't finish because it makes you so sad that it will be gone.

Cant Finish Because I do not like:

Bulliet

FRSB

Can't Finish because I cannot get another:

EV Anabellum - man I love this stuff... probably won't finish it until I find another.

If I try a bottle and just don't like it, I can usually give it away to one of my bourbon drinking friends. Everyone's palate is different, and even if I hate it, one of these guys usually likes it. This sometimes includes bringing it to the Gazebo. People there might want to try it if it is something unusual. If neither of these work for you, don't feel bad about ejecting it into the trash bin. Life's too short and the bunker too large to be drinking crappy whiskey!

I used to have about 50 bottles with only 1 or 2 drinks left, but a few years ago space considerations, and common sense dictated that I couldn't keep doing that. Plus, there were times when I would look at all of those little bits of great bourbon, yet couldn't bring myself to finish them off, so I would pour myself a Maker's and just stare at the WT 12yo. Sad really. So, I set out on a mission to put all of those old soldiers to rest. That was a fun month :yum: Now I have less than 10 bottles open at a time, and I'm not afraid to drink them! Maybe EW Antebellum would be a more easily understood abreviation.

What I used to do is force myself to finish the bottle etc... but now I have a ongoing (or revolving) vatting of bottles I don't like that are at least 2/3 finished and I don't feel like finishing. So far my vatted bottle has EC18, JBB, and WTRB.... It's not that these are "bad" bottles (maybe the EC18 is bad) but I have too many great bottles to choose from to take from these.

I actually drink the vatted once in a while and I kind of like it! The wood from the EC18 is mellowed a bit and the spice of the WTRB is very nice.

Since I don't have any backup bottles of my favorite expressions (and they're not available locally), I'm mired in a situation where "I like it too much to drink it" is setting in. I guess that this makes those selections special so far, but it's nothing that a phone call and purchase can't fix.

There's very few bourbon's that I dislike...most I like or love and gladly pour away. One exception is the gold foil Hirsch. I don't like it so I actually used that the other day to make a whiskey sour.....sacrilege, maybe.....drinkable..definitely.

Once a bottle is opened, it gets finished. Stuff that I know I can't replace usually remains unopened until a special occassion presents itself. But once opened - down the hatch.

I can only recall pouring down the drain three bottles of "bad" hooch - a couple of Michter's jugs where the whisky was tainted by the ceramic, a Van Winkle New Jersey Centennial commemorative (same reason), and a liter of JW Dant BIB that was just foul.

When I open a bottle, I save 4oz and 2oz in high quality sample bottles, so I can have access to nice, fresh, non (or at least low) oxidizaed samples long after the bottle is finished. This lowers the stress of finishing a soon to be difficult to find botteling.

I don't have the problem either...

If it's bad it goes into mixed drinks. If it's really bad it goes down the drain (only did that twice).

For the good stuff, I make it a point to finish off any bottle that gets down to the last coupla pours. It hurts sometimes, but that's what the "empty bottle support group" is for.

Only had to drain one bottle...and that was EW 1783. It was just foul and it was not just me. We opened it one New Year's and couldn't even mix it with anything. Everything else has been rightfully flushed through the ol' liver. :drinking:

I had read that somewhere on here....but it had more of a kerosene flavor. My stomach churns when I think about it. I'll have to try it again when I'm out....so I don't waste a bottle again.

Noah's Mill....that stuff is like firewater. I just can't get it down...and it's going out as a sample for my upcoming tasting session. Who ever likes it the most, is taking it home with them!

I found that if you start the night on a bottle that you like, then after a few.. switch to the brand you dont like so much. It might slow you down some, but its easier to work it down.
