Australian Kentucky Gold

I recently obtained a bottle of 'Kentucky Gold Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey'. It is obviously a cheap bottling as it was a giveaway with another promotion though i am curious about its origins. At first i assumed it would just be a young heaven hill bourbon but on the bottle it states it was made at the 'Quality Control Distillery Co' where it was both distilled and bottled. My question has anyone else tasted it or have any information about it? I'm not expecting to have gotten my hands on a diamond whiskey with a cult underground following but am simply curious as i could not find any information on a quick search of the net. The knowledge on this forum is far greater then my own so i look forward to hearing what anyone has to say on this bourbon.

Jack, I'm pretty sure that it's part of the Heaven Hill family. Others here may be able to give more information.

If you like the Kentucky Gold, then I highly recommend Nelson County (usually found at BWS)

As Bettye Jo points out, it is Heaven Hill Bourbon produced for Coles Liquor. You got it at Liquorland or 1st Choice, right?It was recently dropped from 80 proof to 74 proof. Check your bottle to see what you have.

I haven't tried it for at least a few years now, but I remember it being a decent bourbon. Liquorland/1st Choice also stock Iron Horse, which is another Heaven Hill offering. You can at times get 2 for $50, and it isn't a bad pour for the price.

That just scratches the surface. I think Bettye Jo told us once that there are more than 2,000 different labels in Heaven Hill's label room.

Thanks for you promt replies guys, the bottle i have is 74 proof which is got me wondering in the first place because i thought all bourbon has to be bottled at 80 proof or above, or is that only for the domestic trade and not the export. A bottle shop just around the corner is selling ironhorse for two for $48 so ill have to pick a few up.

You are correct Jack, the 80 proof rule is within the US. They cut them down (to 74) here to pay less import duty, and keep the prices lower.

I have a 1L bottle of Kentucky Gold from a few years ago that is 80 proof. It would be good to compare the 2 and see how much it has changed.
