Was hoping you guys could help a fledgling out. Actually, I know the answer already - "get both".

Now, I'm German, so I have to research and obsess everything to death. What should be my next purchase down bourbon road?

So far, my favorite is BT, followed by RR90 (sorry, couldn't find the RR101). I liked the 4 Roses Small Batch when I first got it, but it has a bit too much of an astringent quality to me and not enough heat. I like a bit of heat, but not burn, and want a bit of complexity. What do you all think I should try out next?

I have not found the nuances of WTRB for some reason. I find it smooth and good but I really like the WTKS better. If you can find an older one even better (the date is on the neck sticker). I have not had the current but the others I've had are wonderful! The current OGD 114 did not have a great deal of depth in it but is a great pour for the money!

Good luck on which ever you choose! (It's all good)!

Tony

I'm fond of WT RB; it's one I keep around.

Despite that, I recommend you try the OGD. It has a higher rye content than most bourbons, and would be a variation from what you've been drinking.

This is a tough one; two of my favorite pours to choose from.

Though I somewhat prefer the Rare Breed as an everyday bourbon, I'd advise you to try the OGD114 first. I find it very distinctive and like the combination of the rye spice and the heat of the nice long finish. (And I mean heat, not burn...)

WTRB is worth its price, but I think the OGD114 is an exceptional deal at around $20.

Two GREAT choices. WTRB has more complexity (kind of like egg nog -- nutmeg, vanilla) IMO but OGD114 has that nice rye spice that I just crave. I think you have to have both. It's a toss up in enjoyment that I'll give to OGD just on price point.

I have been unfortunate to have had bad OGD 114s, at least from what I can tell about its popularity... but I love the WTRB... I keep at least a bottle around...

It is to bad that we can't compare different pours without the cost in mind.

I wish I did not know the price of anything.

However, with that said, OGD114, with price in consideration is better than WTRB, but only with price in mind, price being equal, I'd go for the WTRB.

I vote WTRB. I like the OGD 114 but not as much as I like the OGD BIB. The BIB version is one of my daily's. WTRB is a different league than 114 IMO...

There's something I absolutely love about the BIB and strangely, I reach for it more than the 114 when I have both in house. It's not that BIB is superior but that it is just so darn drinkable.

If I had to drink 114, BIB or WTRB every day in the end I'd do the BIB!

Took the majority's advice and picked up the OGD114 last night. Made sense to get something totally different than what I've already tried.

First pour of the night was some of my remaining 4RSmB. Funny, I haven't really been enjoying it since my first pour, but last night it must've saw the end coming and fought for position in the hutch. Man, I enjoyed it! But that OGD was staring me in the face, so I had to have a pour. The nose was definitely not what I was expecting! not really much of an alcohol burn on the nose, there was definitely some cinnamon, and a sweet citrus smell. The taste - first, a great cinnamon red hot taste, and then WHAM! lots of yeast with an almost wild mushroom taste to it, which disappeared quite quick to be replaced by the cinnamon again. Amazingly not much alcohol burn at all, although a nice big heat. That yeast taste wasn't working for me after drinking the 4R, but I suspect, without that type of interference, I'd probably enjoy it - I'm a big Heffeweizen fan. Looking forward to trying some tonight.

This seems to be a great bourbon to introduce someone to tasting - not much complexity, very bold, easy to discern nose and taste.

Irrespective of price, I prefer OGD 114. I have had some awful bottles from old batches of WTRB, but moreover, OGD 114 has a higher rye content, and it provides a challenge of an enjoyable sort. I got hung up on WTRB for a while, but I find myself returning to WT101 and WTKS and WTRR101 and WT12 and WT Rye (get the picture?) more often than WTRB these days.

All that said, you need to try WTRB. Having tasted several batches now, the current (is it permanent? or just a huge batch?) WT-03RB is IMO the best and most complex. You may find it agrees with your palate more than OGD 114.

As for me and my house, perish the thought of a day with no OGD open here.

yeah, same here, the BIB is really an outstanding pour for $14, huge yummy flavor and $7 less than the cardboard tasting JD on the shelf above it. I think I'm one of the few who buys it at my local shop, they're always dusty when I take one off the shelf and I can see the empty spot from the last bottle I bought off the shelf. Maybe it's the bright orange cap, makes it look like a toy gun? Who cares, more for me, I say.

I just bought my first bottle of OGD114 last week. I have not tried the WTRB as of yet, it is on my list though. I really liked the OGD114......a lot! I like the higher rye bourbons and this one really hit the spot. I think my next bottle will be the BIB instead of the 114, thanks to some of the replies to you post. Glad you liked the OGD!

I've been enjoying that OGD! At first, that yeast flavor came on a bit too strong but after being open a week, it calmed down a bit to a much more pleasant, and stable level.

Now my typical night is a pour of BT followed by a pour of OGD114. Good stuff and saves me a bunch of money.
