Found a bottle of GTS 2007 here in Shreveport, LA at Cuban Liquor for $56.

Bought it and tried it. Liked it very much but I must say it tasted almost exactly like a slightly stronger version of 12 year old Elijah Craig which I can also get here in Shreveport for $19.

Just an FYI.

Admittedly my taste senses aren't near as developed as most on here but I know Elijah Craig from a mile away over almost all other bourbons. I love EC.

So why do I find GTS going for $300 in Japan?

Because it was never actually marketed there, that I know of, so you are paying some guy to import it.

so you are paying some guy to import it.

And people apparently pay it, too. Wow. Must be good stuff.

As Willie Sutton once said when asked why he robbed banks - "Cause that's where the money is".

It is very good stuff. But $300 worth of good stuff? Hmm...

Hi Attila--

Another reason to pay Koji/Michael a visit at Sals in Saginuma... I helped him import this year's BTAC at somewhat less than the going rate in Tokyo shops. (Stagg is wonderful, but it's not worth $300!)

Be glad for all of the export-only expressions that you can get there that we have to pay the big bucks for over here (if we can find them at all!) I just replied on another thread about Evan Williams 12yo which seems a very available, very inexpensive bottle in Japan, but is almost unknown in the US.

Value remains in the eye of the beholder.... Even Stagg at $300 is less than many other premium libations, especially when one adds water to cut it back to a reasonable drinking proof. Not that I would pay $300... but then again I wouldn't pay for a round of golf at Pebble Beach or an 82' first growth bordeaux.... to each their own passion and valuation standard...

Evan Williams 12yo

I havent figure out why this bourbon gets all the props yet. Compared to Blantons, PVWFR13 and WTRB, it sings less vibrantly to me.

Sals in Saginuma

Sals is awesome. But I dont travel 90 minutes to go drink. I am too lazy.

Esp. when the staff can be high maintenance.

Indeed, one mans treasure is another mans trash. I didnt mean to insinuate that I believed it not to be worth it. I intended to convey my expression of being impressed by people paying it.

Ha! I'll be staying in Shinagawa this week -- got a recommendation for a good bourbon bar somewhere on the Tokyo side of the Yamanote line? (Other than passing through from Narita, I rarely make it to the Chiba side of the bay.)

English-speaking staff preferred, although I've been known to make my way through an export-only bourbon flight through my (very) limited Nihongo at the Boylston in Shibuya.

(Forgot to answer this one...) I agree with you based on those comparisons -- though to me it depends on which Blanton's expression. In the other thread I was simply pointing out that EW12 is basically unknown in the States. I will say that it is a fine value pour -- ought to be a bit cheaper than each of the comparative whiskeys that you list.

Off topic: Nihonjin or gaijin? Your English is excellent.

While out hunting today, I found a small store hidden in a strip mall. Went inside, browsed around and noticed a box on the top shelf, behind a bunch of other bottles (it's good to be tall sometimes.) It was a 3 bottle case of GTS 07 and I started to get very excited. I reached back and lifted up the box WAY too easily. It was empty :(

The owner said he sold out quick at $50 a bottle and had been trying to get more, but to no avail. This is the only place I've seen the Stagg in Florida (The WLW has been spotted occasionally.)

Needless to say, I made sure the owner knew to contact me if/when more came in.
