Proper glassware?

Hi there ... I created an account JUST so I could ask this question: My husband's favorite drink is Woodford Reserve, and I'd like to get his some appropriate glassware for his drink. I'll probably end up picking up something vintage ... should I just look for a "lowball" glass, or is there something bourbon-specific that I should seek out?

Well, there are these.

However, these are from the Riedel "Overture" series and I think they're just glass, not crystal.

So you could go with these which are designed for Scotch but would work fine, and are from the "Vinum" series which are crystal.

For myself, however, I'm thinking about a set of these which I think are crystal as well. We have some of the "O" series wine glasses and they are crystal.

Okay, I just checked and the "O" series are not crystal. I thought they might be because the ones we have lack the beaded rim that one usually finds on non-crystal glassware.

You'll likely get many responses here... based on personal preference. Which is the key.

How does he drink his bourbon? Straight? On the rocks? Mixed in cocktails? Get a glass that works for what he needs.

What does your husband like to drink from now? I'd get him something similar, but better quality or perhaps engraved.

There are specialty tasting glasses on the market but they are not for everyone (a little to fussy for me).

And, please don't forget the contents, include a bottle of his favorite pour (Woodford makes a nice personalized bottle) or expand his tastes with something new.

I have the Riedel Spirit 'O' Stemless Glasses and really love them. They are all I have been using for the past 2 years. They are not made of Lead Crystal, which I hear is bad for brain cells.

I really like the way they pour into your mouth... so SMOOTH. They also fit in the hand very well.

I use to use a Tulip shaped glass (with lid) that came in a sampler pack of Aberlour Scotch. That shape of glass is popular with Scotch drinkers. I still have this glass, but after recieving the O's for a b-day gift, I never went back. I was always worried about breaking the stem on the tulip glass.

As it happens, I have all three of these types, and the first and third are excellent four bourbon, as can be some wine tasting/nosing glasses, such as this one by Towle:

I've found almost identical ones packaged free with a ~$20 Late Bottled Vintage Port by Osborne. Free's a good price:cool: for these.

The key is the tapering from bowl to rim, which allows the aromas from the bourbon's nose to concentrate and be concentrated.

I use the reidel bourbon glasses. They are crystal as are the reidel scotch glasses.

I use them for neat, added water, rocks, etc. You can get any of them on ebay for a pretty good price right now as well.

I actually like the size of the Woodford Reserve glasses they gave out at the Sampler. I find them just right for a pour with or without ice. Plus they are stamped with the WR logo..

They don't appear to be on the website though, so I don't know if they can be purchased or not.

I have a set of the bourbon glasses by Riedel. They really are quite nice. They are made of potash glass, thus they are sturdy and dishwasher-safe (which is an important factor in my selection).

I find they work well for robust spirits, such as Bourbon Whiskey, Aged Rum, Aged Tequila, and even Brandy. The glass is just wide enough to allow the spirit to expand, but not so much that the alcohol vapors kill the nose.

Seeing as how they are not all that expensive, I believe they are certainly worth the price. They also work well for Port and Madeira wine...

The Glencairn nosing glass is pretty popular here. You can find them at the Bourbon Heritage Center Museum (Heaven Hill Distillery) gift shop. It's a very nice glass. I got a bunch when I visited the Heritage Center last year and have given some away to deserving whiskeyphiles. Here's a link.

There my favorites for drinking bourbon... they're rather spendy but are just (for me anyway) the right size and perfectly heavy. (I like a little heft to my glass).

The Glencairn glass is beautiful, especially if you get a glass cover for it.

This just in; The Glencairn company just collaborated with Canadian whisky makers to create a glass specifically for Canadian whisky, though it has been suggested that it would do well with American and Irish too. It is kind of a cross between the Glencairn and an old-fashioned glass. Looks promising...
