Anybody here tried this? A friend said it was one of the best things he ever tasted. I'm not a rum guy but might try to locate a bottle or a pour sometime. Looks interesting, made from pure cane, aged for a bit in oak. Can't get it here in NH, of course:frown:

Cheers!

I tried it when it first came out (three years ago?). For something made from cane juice it had a surprising amount of molasses on the nose, plus more alcohol aroma than I like. It had a nice smoky entry and mid palate, but somewhat bitter finish, and too much burn (for me, anyway). Not all that great for drinking on the rocks, but it worked okay for a mojito. I didn't feel it was worth the price.

I've read that they've reformulated it and it's better than it used to be. It's actually pretty well distributed here in OR so i suppose I should give it another try.

It was good, but over priced. I like a golden rum better personally, so I go with the Pyrate or Old Monk first

10 Cane is not bad but I find it has a slight after taste that I am not all that fond of. As for premium white rums I find the Oronoco the best of the bunch. This is a rum loaded with flavor that will surprise even the most biased of anejo rum drinkers...

I've been wanting to try Oronoco. It showed up on the April OLCC product list, and the first week of that month I ordered a bottle, along with two bottles of Sobieski vodka. The vodka came in this week, but still no Oronoco.

It's apparently The rum these days, and I'm guessing demand is exceeding supply.

Scott, not to hijack the rum thread, but what did you think of the Sobieski vodka? I've been thinking of trying some.

Thanks.

I did not like 10 Cane neat, but in a mixed drink it was acceptable. There are so many other great rums out there.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks Scott, picked up a 1.75 of the Sobieski & it makes a great vodka/tonic, at a good price. Just in time for summer.

The bottle of Oronoco arrived last week, and I tried it yesterday.

NEAT:

Nose: Vanilla, cocoa and a little banana. No alcohol fumes.

Palate: Smooth and round, with just a tiny bit of burn. Again, flavors of vanilla, cocoa and banana.

Finish: Smooth and long.

ON THE ROCKS, WITH A SLICE OF LIME

Similar to above, though the vanilla and cocoa seem less forward and the banana more obvious.

WITH COKE

Doesn't work. Like many strongly flavored white rums (e.g. Clement) the flavor profile clashes with cola.

This is a great rum for sipping on the rocks or even neat. It would work well in a mixed drink such as a traditional daquiri (i.e. not the modern slushy type) or in a mojito. Doesn't mix with Coke, but might with 7-Up (haven't tried that yet).

Glad it worked for you.

Just say NO to high-priced vodka!
