Bushmills 1608

Is the Bushmills 1608 that is currently on the market anything like the 12yr. 1608 from the 1990's that was sold in duty free? The 90's version is fantastic whiskey and IMO the best Bushmills I have ever had!

I never had the 1990s version. This is an excellent whiskey. I would say it is at least the quality of Black Bush. That being said, I thought it was way over priced. I didn't buy a bottle. The liquor store I go to in Little Rock had a bottle for samples, and the owner told me he thought it was over priced before we sampled it. I guess I buy enough that he let me have enough to form an opinion. Unfortunately he didn't have a bottle of Black Bush open for comparison. Like Black Bush, it was much maltier than regular Bushmills. In some ways it reminded me more of their single malt than Black Bush, but again, I had none for comparison. Even though I'm a malt drinker, to me, Bushmills is defined by the Black Bush. I also like their 10 year old single malt better than their 16. I had one bottle of their 21 - IMO that is the Rolls Royce of their distillery. Did you try any of the Connemara I had at the sampler, Thomas? That is my favorite Irish, however, as you know, I'm a peat freak.

It may be over-priced, but this is the only year it will be offered outside of Ireland. Since that is the case, I'm trying to special-order it through my local store.

You're not just paying for the whiskey, you are also paying for collectability. Its value will likely rise as soon as next year.

If anyone is interested, the current Bushmills 1608 is on clearance in Ohio for about 49.00 a bottle. Originally it was priced near 100.00. If anyone wants a bottle, send me a PM!

The problem with collecting Bushmills 1608 is that you won't get to drink it. It's absolutely marvelous, especially because it's a eensy bit closer to a proper bourbon-type proof than the regular Bushmill's 10. Bushmill's 10 is a regular pour of mine, and it's an all time classic, but I'd spring for the 1608 at least once. Sometimes luxury must be indulged.

liquor store and two items jumped out:

Bushmills 1608 - $29.99

Crown Royal XR Rare - $59.99

After reading comments re: the 1608, I am definitely going

to pick up a bottle or two. Will most likely grab a bottle of

the CR XR, if only because of the Waterloo history.

If I'm not mistaken, Crown XR goes for $179 here.

Isn't this what Bush gave the Queen when she visited the US a couple of years ago? Wasn't it something like a case?

I did manage to make it to the store today and carried

away 3 bottles of the 1608 and one XR. Will probably

crack the 1608 open this evening and give it a try.

The store owner told me has surprised to receive

additional shipments of both bottles.

The 1608 packaging is impressive in itself. First you have

a plastic/mylar sleeve. Then a slipcase as you might find

on a nice hardcover edition book. Slide that off and the

bottle is in a velvet storage box with cover. Quite nice

looking.
