Stopped by my local ABC and picked up a Aberlour a'bunadh, batch 29. When I got home I had no intention of bunkering it. I opened it and poured a nice healthy dram. I love that stuff.

I bought my very first bottle of Scotch last night - traded actually. I got a Compass Box Flaming Heart and gave up a Handy from my bunker. I had only occasionally finished a pour of Scotch previously so this was a breakthrough of sorts.

I went to the store with a completely different plan in mind (bourbon buying was the original agenda), but there were two bottles of Laphroaig Cask Strength on the Scotch shelves. I haven't been able to find it locally so far, and everything I've read about it has convinced me I needed to try it, so one of the two came home with me. This is one I've really been looking forward to, so I hope it lives up to expectations.

Personally, as much as I love the Laphroaig Cask Strength, I prefer the Quarter Cask for some reason. I can't quite put my finger on why that is but I'll keep drinking and get back to you. Hope you love it, just the same.

Thanks for distinguishing those. Now that you've mentioned "Quarter Cask", I'm pretty sure that is the one I've seen.

A couple bottles of The Black Bottle (no way to get proper syntax in that sentence, sin tax is a whole nuther subject) and a handle of Jameson, a bottle of Four Roses Small Batch. Whee!

I'm up in Canada and I picked up a Compass Box Peat Monster for the first time. Just cracked it open and find it rather good.

...make that very good!

Yeah, it's nice. Price went down almost $10 recently, too. It is a vatting of Caol Ila and Ardmore, if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, Caol Ila, Ardmore, and now some Laphroaig added too if I'm not mistaken. I paid $58 CDN, I hope the price stays there.

It is. And damned tasty for those of us who like that sort of thing. But I won't recommend it to all and sundry..it's already hard to find around here.

while traveling farther east along the Florida panhandle than usual, I found Yamazaki 12yo at $29.99. One bottle came home with me. I never expected to find this Japanese whisky within driving distance. Easy sales pitch for the wife: "oooohh, remember in Lost in Translation when Bill Murray's character goes to Japan to shoot a commercial for Suntory Whisky?"

Excellent stuff, that. Nice sales pitch, too.

I picked up some Alberta Premium as a backup bottle for my camping trip. Very good stuff in its own right. Now my camping lineup consists of:

Alberta Premium Canadian rye

Cutty Sark blended Scotch

Corner Creek Reserve bourbon

1997 Dalmore

1997 Caol Ila

rather than start a new thread, I'll just ask here.

anyone see Isle of Jura Prophecy on the shelves yet?

Binny's had some tastings last week, so I figure it's close.

It was my group's favorite at WhiskeyFest. Can't wait.

Just got a bottle of Lagavulin for $62 (in CT), which is much less than what I have seen it around MI.

Grant's family reserve - on sale $9.99/750. Pretty tasty blend for that kind of money.

Just ordered 1996 Murray McDavid Isle of Arran. One of my favourite distilleries, so I hope this bottler does it justice.

I was at Julio's for the first time and got a bottle of Imperial from Signatory.

I bought a 1994 G&M from Binny's a while back and liked it a lot, so I got a dif vintage to try.

Next week will be in the northern subs of Chicago and plan to spend some time at the Binny's in Des Plains.

During my travels this week to Tennessee, I picked up a couple of 1979 Bush Pilot 13 yr. Reserves. I've always heard many good things about this Canadian, so I'm looking forward to cracking one open tonight.
