JamesW
If it had a name, I'd kind of expect McLelland Islay to be Bowmore 6. My money is on your Bowmore 12 tasting like a more mature version of McLelland, perhaps for good reason.RogerI actually picked up a Bowmore 12 for the same reason. I find it to have nice flavor. It does satisfy the need for peat and smoke, but does not satisfy the need for complexity. But for the price, it works....I've always found Bowmore 12 to be quite satisfying and perhaps a bit under-rated, though I would agree that it is somewhat less complex than most Islays. Check it out. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll pick one up and give it go.
Megawatt
First time buying McLelland Islay. Not great but better than Black Grouse. Looking for some inexpensive everyday Islay pours. Next purchase may be Bowmore 12. Anyone like or dislike it? I loved the 17 yr.
JamesW
Mclelland's: Smokier, yes. Better...:skep: It has a dirty taste that puts me off. Same with Bowmore 12, but the 12 is far better than McLelland's.
Gillman
McLelland's Islay is indeed (or as far as I am aware) young Bowmore, about 6 years old. This and the true Bowmore do have a specific flavour, almost earthy/heather-like.Gary
Megawatt
I guess that's what I meant by better (i.e., smokier). I was disappointed in Black Grouse since it didn't taste much different than its non-Islay blend offering. It was advertised as the regular Grouse with some Islay malt added to the blend, and that is what I got from it. You're right, it's not super-peaty but for supple smoothness and balance I find it hard to beat at that price. I found it superior to Islay Mist on account of its richer complexity. unclebunk
Scored another dirt cheap bottle of Ardmore Traditional Cask, my new favorite budget whiskey. It's strange, but I held off for the longest time picking up my first bottle when the price was $40. When it suddenly dropped to $30 at Binny's I pounced on it and loved it. A few days later I got a $5 off coupon from Binny's and picked up a second bottle for $25. And today I found it at another store for $21! So I naturally had to pick up another, right?

sku
Yeah, I've been doing some research, and it does seem to be very good whisky and worth more than I paid for it. ($215 out the door):grin:Wow, $215! Nice score!

texascarl
Local store had Highland Park 12 mini bottles, 50ml on sale for $1 each. 15 = 750ml/$15, and they were selling their HP12 750 for $42 and change. I bought about 20 and called my friends who'll be interested. Cheers!
