JamesW
Picked up 2 Danfield's 21 yr at the LCBo for $46 ea. Pretty inexpensive for that age. Very smooth, sweet and subtle. Glad I got them. Thanks Megawatt!
unclebunk
Here in Chicago we have a supermarket/pharmacy chain called Jewel/Osco and the latter sells beer, wine and spirits. Among their many products are a few "house" brands that I've never heard of, but I decided to take a chance on their 10 year old Islay malt which is sold under the "Origine" house label (I noticed Osco also sells Origine vodka, gin and tequila among other spirits) when I saw it on a clearance shelf, reduced from the original price of $25 to $7.99. I shit you not, the stuff was actually surprisingly good and considerably better than Black Bottle and Islay Mist, both of which I really like. I know that sounds hard to believe but several other friends, in a blind tasting, thought the same. God knows who produces the whisky for Origine but at $7.99 I wish I had bought the other two remaining bottles before someone else snatched them up. I tried Googling "Origine" to find out more info but it turned up absolutely nothing for me. Clearly, the whisky is a blend of Islay malts but is one with more body than BB or IM and a nice buttery/silky texture. I'll be looking for more to put in my crystal decanters now that I know my friends like it too.
boss302
In honor of St. Patrick's Day, I bought a bottle of Michael Collins 10-year Single Malt Irish Whiskey. I'm curious to see what it's like, since the label says "lightly peated."It is a product distilled by Cooley, who has yet to let me down, so I'll let you know what I think of this dram in the next few days. squire
No Irish in the house, an oversight which shows how busy I've been lately.
squire
For reasons which I cannot recall I was thinking 'Origine' is a house brand owned by Albertson's.

ThomasH
I got a bottle of Wisers 10yo. Canadian. I have bottles of the 18 and Reserve so why not. Besides, it came with a free miniature of 360 vodka attached to the bottle neck. I'll put it in my collection!Thomas

G.H.Adams
Picked up some Forty Creek Barrel Select and a bottle of Forty Creek Double Barrel Reserve. I would love to find the Confederation Oak down here in the states. Maybe some day.
bgast1
Grant's Family Reserve. Picked it up for the price only. Unexciting whisky but it is still whisky. I don't feel as if I got absolutely nothing for my money or it was a total waste but I cannot compare it to Laphroiag which I bought last night or even Famous Grouse (the next level up from the basic) but I have to drink it over ice cubes and no water to even get much flavor.Perhaps I spoiled myself by picking up the Laphroiag. I am still too new to whisk(e)y and I am just learning to appreciate it. Unfortunately my tastes are too expensive for my budget.

Megawatt
I've been eying that. Worth the price tag?Hmm, still not sure. It didn't make such an immediate impression as CC Sherry Cask or even Crown Royal Black. But as with many good Canadians, (Crown Royal Cask No. 16 comes to mind), it gets better with time. The most striking thing about it is the clean, smooth oak flavour which persists long after you swallow. It is not the heavy charred oak of bourbon or the more musty oak of older Canadian whisky but is rather fresh and sweet. There is also some nice vanilla, toffee, some toasted nuts, and some fruitiness too. It is quite subtle at first. Overall I think I'm glad that I picked it up. I also really liked their Double Barrel Reserve, which struck me as sweeter and creamier. Not sure which I like better.
