I'd be happy to just find a bottle of A'bunadh... regardless of batch#.

I used to be able to get it any time, now, all I can find is the 12 year.

The 16 year old has become one of my favourite malts.

  • 2 weeks later...

Forty Creek Double Barrel Reserve. Not too shabby, very easy drinking. Started a bit harsh but once the bottle got its first breath of air, the alcohol kick went smooth again. Nice.

Ardmore Traditional Cask. Finally got some at the LCBO. 50% higher than what I paid in the US but I'm finding myself growing numb to the sticker shock I first experienced when coming here.

Picked up Glendower Port Finish 15 year old pure malt. I was very impressed with the 8 year old but this one seems a little imbalanced, maybe too sweet.

I have heard wonderful things about the Ardmore Traditional Cask, but have not had the opportunity yet. I'm a huge fan of the Islay single malts because of the heavy peat profile (Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Laphroig, among others). I live on the Michigan side of the Detroit River and visit the LCBO stores and Duty Free shops, at times, to sample my favorite Canadian whisky.

To help with the high LCBO prices, here is one trick that was told to me by an LCBO clerk in Ontario: Visit across the border, pick up several bottles (I usually return with 3-4), and make sure that you declare them on your return. Generally, you are waived through as the Customs officers doesn't want to hassle with the forms for just a few bottles. If you are asked to pay the duty, it is only a couple of dollars per bottle. The LCBO clerk observed Americans returning with as much as a case (12 bottles) of their favorite spirit!

A couple of Laphroaig Cairdeas. Thanks to Lost Pollito for taking care of me and letting me have a taste of Alligator as well.

I saw a bottle named Peat Monster made by Compass and I bought one. It was not that peaty at all but a decent whisky. Slightly sweet but needs more depth in my opinion. And its a blend, not single malt.

Let's clarify something: Peat Monster is a vatted malt, aka blended malt. It is a blend of 11 year old Caol Ila, 14 year old Ardmore, and perhaps some Laphroaig. Since many blends contain only around 20% malt, whereas Peat Monster is 100% malt, I would say it more closely resembles a single malt than a blend.
