Yeah, Alberta Premium is quite good, as is Alberta Springs. One of my all-time favourite whiskies is Alberta Premium Limited Edition, aged 25 years. It used to be available in Ontario for $29.95, but I guess it finally ran out.

I wonder if there are any outlets that ship Alberta Premium south of the border? Can't imagine how good that 25 year old APLE must have been. And under $30, to boot!

Laphroiag 10yr CS. I hardly ever buy scotch, but the Islay Malts call for me every once in a while. I almost grabbed the Lagavulin, but I really like the Cask Strength stuff, which it wasn't.

Ardbeg Airidh Nam Beist. Been looking at that bottle for the last 6 months and finally had to pull the trigger.

I bought a Aquafina today which I assume is close to the "Water Of Life Thing",.... if not then it was just tap water in a cool looking plastic half liter bottle.

Today I picked up a bottle of Redbreast 12 and the 1993 Signatory Vintage bottling of Ledaig (15 y/o). I know Tobermory has a bad rep with some people but the Ledaig was a very nice late Septemeber afternoon sipper. It reminded me a bit of honey and lemon tea with a nice parting shot of peat in the finish. And the Redbreast, wow. The best Irish Whiskey I've ever had, hands down, and probably in my top 10 whiskeys of any type. Something bourbonesque about it for sure.

A 4/5 Quart of Grant's blended with an 8yr age statement on it. Thought it might be ok for under $20.

Two new bottles at the LCBO:

Glen Garioch 12 year old, 48% alc/vol, non-chillfiltered.

Glendower 8 year old pure malt, 43% alc/vol

I am very excited about my purchase today! Walked into a store I'd been in before looking at bourbon and never noticed this bottle! It's a 90 proof, tax stamped Laphroaig 10 yr old with the old box. Bottle has oz and ml on it, should be really tasty! Sorry the pictures suck, they were taken with my phone.

Cheers

Tony

Tony, you lucky dog! I've thought that Laphroaig 10 yr has lost some of it's challenge in recent times. I'd be interested to know if it's me or the whisky that's changed.

I picked up some MacPhail's Collection. I feel like I've got to support an effort to bring out some decently priced Scotch (less than $30/bottle). I grabbed the Highland Park and the Glenrothes.

"I've thought that Laphroaig 10 yr has lost some of it's challenge in recent times."

Stu and Doug swear the older Laphroaig pre Fleur de lis was fantastic. I can't handle the smoke in scotch especially when it's that pronounced.

Picked up a Jura Superstition. My first taste of it. Shows nice smoke with a spicy finish. Very enjoyable, but not terribly complex.

In Chicago on Saturday, I got to taste a load of great Scotches. I wanted to take them all home with me but had to settle for two. I picked up a bottle of Springbank 10 y/o and Compass Box's The Peat Monster. I'm looking forward to breaking them open sometime this week!

Picked up a Glendower 8 today on the recommendation of Megawatt. I'm having some now and I must say it is very good. I'm having trouble putting my finger on exactly which malts may be dominating but I have the sense that I've had this before. That is, one of the malts in there tastes very familiar. The taste is sweet with a bit of smoke and spice in the finish. This beats many comparably priced blends out there.

Thanks for the heads-up on this one Megawatt:toast:

Grabbed an HP12 at the LCBO for $55. Higher than I've ever paid before but one of my favorites nonetheless.

I picked a bottle of Auchentoshan Triple Wood, for no other reason than I have never tried Auchentoshan before. I probably won't open it right away. Can anyone give a little insight as to what to expect?

ebo - What better reason is there to buy a bottle of whisky ;). How about you let us know what to expect? This just became available in Ontario so I'd be interested to hear your impression of it.

James - Glad you like Glendower. It is fantastic with a single ice cube (watch it go all cloudy). I agree that it gives some of the more expensive malts a run for their money.

On the subject of good value, I picked up a bottle of The Singleton of Glendullan. It is a 12 year old Speyside malt aged in bourbon and sherry casks. Subtle and balanced with some fruit and warm spice notes. Quite nice, if unremarkable. It compares favourably against similarly-priced Scotches.

Actually if you've never tried Auchentoshan you can expect it to be Irish-like in its crispness and lightness, though the Three Wood version might be heavier than their standard bottle. Auchentoshan seems simple at first but there is a lot going on if you give it some time.

Pretty well spot-on with this assessment. I enjoyed it at first but grew bored in time and probably wouldn't but it again.

Picked up a bottle of the new Kilchoman from Islay last week and opened it last night at the NeoTexan's party. Obviously it is very young (3 years), but has a very nice feel to it. Not as much smokey peat as you normally associated with Islay, but has a crisp iodine flavor.

I think I paid around $65 (can't find the receipt and it was on sale so the web price doesn't help me). I can't call it a value when compared to Lagavullin's current price out East, but it was unique enough I definitely will keep it on hand (What can I say, put a sherry finish on a whisky and I have to have it).
