I've been looking around for the PVW 10 yo with no luck. According to their website they have two versions. Is this available? My local source who is usually very good at locating specials for me says they don't see it on their store computer listing. I have the 12, 15, 20 and 23 so I need the two 10's two complete their bourbon offerings.

I don't know what to tell ya.

I just finished 2 bottles of the ORVW 10yo.

But then again it was last Winter that I scored them,...

The name is a bit different so that may be why they did see it in their computer.

Old Rip Van Winkle 10 year (2 versions 90 proof and 107 proof).

It still should be around in some stores. I picked up a couple 107's a few weeks back.

That's good to know, I'll keep my search going.

BTW, what do they go for?

Just opened a bottle that I bought last weekend. (ORVW 10, that is.)

The 107's i bought were $29.99. I suspect a decent range for the 107 would be $25 - $35

I've found the 10/90 but never the ORVW 10/107 in Louisville, but last night I headed south on 65 to Exit 117 Shepherdsville, KY. I was actually hunting for any leftover OC12 or OCPR (no luck) , but stumbled across a good selection of Bourbon at Turnpike Liquors right off the exit.

I found ORVW 10/107 and bought it at a decent price ($30.70). Last time I bought it was at Bardstown Sampler at Toddy's for $35.99.

Right next to the 10/107 on the top shelf were Pappy 15 & Pappy 20. Amy at Turnpike Liquors was very helpful, knowledable and friendly.

Greg sort of said this, but I'm not sure it came across. There is no 10-year-old Pappy Van Winkle. The 10-year-old Van Winkle bourbons are sold under the Old Rip Van Winkle brand name.

Chuck,

I just love the old-fashioned look of the ORVW bottle and label. To my eye the PVW look is rather plain and unappealing in comparison. Even so, I would have expected an all-or-nothing approach to the change.

As a former marketer how does all this strike you? Do you see any reason to continue the older package design?

Yours truly,

Dave Morefield

I agree with you Dave. That short fat bottle was very unique and old school. Not to mention the juice was pretty good as well. The Pappy bottle is way to similar in style to the antique collection from BT.

From a marketing standpoint, I think there is a disconnect between the hokey ORVW label and the premium price. The other Van Winkles are much more in line with what I think a consumer expects from a premium product, i.e., a bit more sophisticated. At this point, though, I think ORVW has a following. As for the price, Maker's Mark used to be considered very pricey, but the category's price points have moved and now Maker's seems pretty moderate, even within the "better bourbons" segment, as it's less than Knob Creek, Woodford Reserve, etc. My point is that if he keeps the Old Rips in the $30 range as the Pappys and other super-premiums drift higher, he might find himself with representatives in two different price segments, which would be good for his business.

Budget-wise, I don't have a problem with having two bottles of Old Rip 107 at the $30-$36 range as I do now, especially since it's hard to find around here and it's great bourbon.

Once you get to the $50, $90 and higher range, as with the Pappys. there's no way I can justify (for my budget, I'm not speaking for anyone else) having more than 1 bottle of those at a time. I do have what's left of a bottle of PVW 23, and will replace that when it's gone. And I'm very tempted to head back to the store where I found the 107 and pick up his big brother Pappy 15, since I don't have one of those.

I picked up a bottle of the ORVW 10 year 107 yesterday in Ann Arbor. My receipt indicates $49.78 with tax.

Craig,

Was that at A&L Wine Palace? They used to have a sign on their door that they charge the state minimum, and I'd hold them to it.

Budget wise, 10yo ORVW's are similar priced to the Aussie market cost of Jim Beam White Label (assuming dollar for dollar exchange)

So from that point of view, I'd drink ORVW 10yo over Jim Beam White any day. (I like JB White, but it doesn't compare to ORVW 10yo in my opinion)

As for marketing, or bottle packaging.... I much prefer the UK bottle of ORVW 10/90 - it's a tall (wine style) bottle like the rest of the Pappy line-up with a smaller version of the squat bottle label.

That's quite a markup...Turnpike Liquors In Shepherdsville sold it for $30.70, and I found ORVW 10/107 (already had two bottles so I didn't buy it) while looking for something else at Morris Liquors in Louisville for 29.99!

The 10 yr 107 dissappears off the shelf before I seem to buy it. It is one of those bourbon's I find at the wrong time. I do have a couple of 90's tho. next time I'll leave the GTS on the shelf>>>>NOT.

Here in Japan, Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13Y and Old Rip Van Winkle Old Time Rye 12Y go for about the same price. Whats the relation between the two, or maybe a better question is, besides the one year, whats to distinguish the two?

The FRR13 is one of my favorite whiskeys.

They came from the same exact stocks, at first.

The 13yo has been the same year's distillation for a long time, and was then supplemented with some other stocks of rye and tanked when it was around 20 yo +/-. It's always had the same age statement, but much of it is several years more in the wood.

I believe the 12yo was bottled when it really was 12 years old and shortly thereafter.

Presumably, the Family Reserve Rye is the same there as it is here, including the full range of different bottlings, but it's all from a couple of known and very good rye stocks. The Old Time Rye isn't produced here and hasn't been for many years, so it's hard to say. I love it, but it's gotten too dear for me.

At some point in the aging cycle, i.e., eventually, Van Winkle Rye probably will be rye whiskey made at Buffalo Trace, and the Old Time Rye may be that already.

Thank you Chuck. Sorry to be dense, but where is "here"? I note your profile says Chicago.

The Van Winkle Old Time Rye is not sold in the United States. That's what I should have said.

Okay, I see. Thank you.

I havent seen PVW 10, but I have seen VWFR10 in Japan, but only on auction, not at the stores.
