Mostly neat.

Occasional rocks.

Occasional mint julep.

Ditto. What he said! Although rocks is very, very rare for me.

My dad taught me to run to run your tap for like 3 minutes and add a splash of that water to a bourbon with 3 cubes. I always like a little lemon rind to mine if I have lemons.

This is a really interesing thread.

In reference to: 'The late Booker Noe was said to have favored a drink he called "Kentucky Tea".' I wonder about the accuracy of this earlier post from LS. I had the pleasure of talking for a long time with Booker and Fred and sipping bourbon with them in 2000. Booker said you have to cut Booker's with water. But when he cut it in front of me it was not with such a great amount of water. Next time one of us sees Fred it would make an interesting discussion.

Maybe I'll try the 1/2 and 1/2 recipe just to try it!

I love bourbon and cola -- but I used to get myself in big trouble because it goes down so smooth for me.

When I drink on the rocks, it is much easier to sip and stay somewhat sane :-)

My wife and I enjoy Manhattans on Monday and Friday evenings. On Wednesdays, we have a tidy dram of everyday bourbon, neat. And on Saturdays, we have one of our special bourbons, neat.

I can't help but wonder what happens on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday! You left us in suspence

My father-in-law drinks JBW and water with a spoonful of sugar. I tried it once and didn't like it. He mixed it with some Coke and I enjoyed it a lot more.

Since I began exploring SB.com, I have learned to enjoy and savor bourbon neat and on the rocks. Before, I mostly used it as a mixer with coke, sprite, ginger ale, etc.

I would say as of today, my enjoyment breaks down as follows:

25% neat

25% on the rocks

50% as a mixer (especially during the warm summer months)

I like mine neat most of the time but a hot summer night does require a cube or two.

I wouldn't put ice in any bourbon though, I find EC12 and makers good with ice but I wouldn't put ice in stag or water for that matter!

As far as putting hair on your chest... it's a bold face lie, cause I'm just about bald there too!

Whoops, sorry for the slow response, Kitzg (Greg); I've been off-line for a couple of days. We abstain on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The self-imposed restriction seems to prevent the whole thing from becoming ho-hum. As is, we regard Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays as treats. I fear every day consumption could slide into something dark for us. This last statement is not a comment on those who do consume daily. You've got to know your own tendencies.

Cheers!

Okay, I have been drinking my bourbon neat. A double with one ice cube. One the rocks. With a splash of room temp. water. With a splash of ice water. Everywhich way.

I gotta say, tonight I went back to having a twice up, double (AKA bourbon and branch), and hafta say that was the best bourbon I have had in a month. Anything else is too warm, too cold, or too strong.

By twice up, double, I mean:

4 oz. of bourbon

4 oz. of chilled still mineral water

2 ice cubes.

When it comes down to it, the best way to drink a bourbon, is to drink it the way you enjoy it.

Hear, hear! (If it was good enough for Booker Noe, it's good enough for me!)

That is preciesly how I drink mine. However, my prefered way is neat. that is not to say that it is the best or only way just my favorite way as I find the mixed with water to weak. I still experiment and I would advise you to do the same.

I'm going to beat a dead horse and say, "Amen to that!" Drink it neat and if the alcohol is a bit overwhelming, throw a splash of distilled or spring water. That will wake-up the other flavors in the whiskey. Ice is also good sometimes.
