I thought the twenty year old was pricey, but I saw, for the first time, a bottle of twenty three year old for $210. It was the only one on the shelf and I left it there cause wow 210, the most I've spent so far for a single bottle was 95 for WT american spirit, there was three of those on the shelf, so two remain.

I saw the 23 for $226, the 20 for $95 and the 15 in the $50 range in the Austin area on Thursday. Of course, at this store, if you buy two of the identical items they will give you a discount....but, damn that's alot of money for 1.5 liters of bourbon.

What letter on the 23yrs? A, B, or just numbers?

$210 is not a bad price....

Best I recall there were no letters, just 23 year old age stated.

I asked the wife pretty please and was shot down horribly.

Bill,

What Emerald was referring to is the bottle number which is located under "Family Reserve" on the label. Some have an "A" prefix eg. A1439, some have a "B" prefix eg. B1201....and some just have a number with no prefix. If it was a "B" prefix, he would tell you to run out and buy it for your wife as a gift

Do you realize the dangers of me driving to Louisville to look at this bottle again? and buying it for Lauren as a gift reminds me of a simpsons episode where Homer bought Marge a bowing ball with his name on it. It backfired for him, cause she leaned to bowl with the tutelage of another man!

But now my curiosity has been peeked; what do these prefixes mean?

At two locations in Peoria I ran across PVW 23. Both locations priced them at $199. In each instance they were behind locked glass and in red velvet bags. So, there is no way I could have determined A, B, or just numbers, not without asking to examine the bottle. Both stores had PVW 20 priced at $99. I thought about buying a bottle, I had the cash to spend, but even at a hundred bucks a bottle, man, that's only one bottle. I would spend that much for WT American spirit, but I know I love everything Turkey.

I've only seen the Pappy 20 in red bags, and the Pappy 23 in black bags.

I may be mistaken then. But I could have swore I saw the 20 sitting uncovered and the 23 in a red bag with the bag sagged enough that you could make out the 23 at the top. I think I remember one store with bottles in black bags sitting behind an unbagged 20. I have never had either one and these two stores are the only places I have seen them. I may be remembering the color back-wards. In any case, the price, I'm sure about.

The important thing to look for is the Lawrenceburg facility on the label. That indicates a very old product that is hard to find.

The rest of the group should be similar since they were all distilled to the same general tolerances at SW.

It appears that it is not available in any of the PALCB stores. It is available through their internet site - pawineandspirits.com.

The 200+ price tag will probably keep me away from ever buying a bottle.. but I recently got to try about two pours of this and it was fantastic!

of course it was enjoyed outside, with a cigar... after a night of drinking the 10/107, 12, 15, 20 paired with food and enjoyed with Julian and Preston themselves. tough to beat that.

I have to admit that this approaches the status of first growth Bordeaux for me. I have 3 bottles (various releases) in the bunker, none of which will be opened before my 40th birthday/ whenever I get married. I just can not bring myself to crack one for anything less (and I question that wisdom every time I eye a fourth bottle).

Anyone have input on the similarities or differences between the 20yo and the 23yo. They are both available here and since the 20yo has jumped to $175 they are about the same price (23yo=$223). I have a couple of the 20yo left from when it was still $90 and am contemplating a 23yo, so...what's the distinctions?

Just based on price, I would say if you like Pappy 20, go somewhere and buy more while it is under $100. At the same time, if you want to try Pappy 23, it seems (at least around here), prices are moving more towards the $300 range (although as I have mentioned, you can still get it for $200 if you shop around).
