Sad Day - Bourbon Spillage

So I bought a bottle of Buffalo Trace on my way home yesterday. I forgot about the bottle being in the car altogether until tonight when my wife and I got in the car to go to town (I was driving my wife's car). That is when we were hit with the strong smell of bourbon. It turns out the bottle had fallen off the backseat and dislodged the cork. 4/5 of the bottle had ended up on her seat cushions - it had just barely missed spilling all over her "teacher bag" with all her stuff for her kindergarten class.

I am bummed because I lost most of a bottle of good bourbon. She is upset because her car smells like alcohol.

2 questions: has anyone else had an unfortunate incident like this? Does anyone know a good way to get the smell out?

I bought a bottle of Pappy 20 for a friend several months ago and gave it to him when we met for dinner. He put it in the back of his SUV. When he dropped his niece off that night and opened the SUV back to get her stuff the Pappy rolled out onto her driveway; needless to say the bottle didn't survive the fall. He said he was tempted to get down and lick it up. S##t happens.

This happened to me once. I sat my truck in the sun with the windows down and loaded the spill area with febreze. the next day you could only smell the febreze. I'm with Timothy, wish it could smell like bourbon all the time but I bet the police would have given me a hard time if I were to be pulled over!

This discussion reminded me of a long-ago post by Bettye Jo Boone, whose work at Heaven Hill Distillery ensures that the aroma of liquor follows her home after every shift.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen a post from her in a while. I wonder whether she's gone back to school for yet another professional certification.

I had this happen with a bottle of Knob Creek, forgot I had it in the car.

The heat got to it and the cork popped out, but I did enjoy the smell for at least a month!! Best car freshener ever!

I had a somewhat similar experience a few years ago. Found a bottle of BMH 17 at a very attractive price. I'm on the way home and some idiot cuts me off (of course without any kind of signal). I slam on the brakes to avoid a collision and the BMH rockets forward off the seat. Broke the neck on the bottle and, as I tried to get to the shoulder as quickly as possible, I got to watch the contents gurgle onto my floor mats.

I still get a tear when I think about it.

First, my condolences on the loss of liquid. :shocked:

The trunk of our Accord has a little pocket/nitch on the drivers side that is the perfect size for a bottle of bourbon. The only think that I've purchased thus far that didn't fit was Blanton's, so it fits my needs well.

I must be paranoid about local law enforcement as I never carry a bottle of whiskey in the passenger compartment of my vehicle whether or not it is still factory sealed.

I have heard of folks always putting the ammunition in the trunk and the gun(s) in the passenger compartment, or vice versa, as a precaution against zealous law enforcement, when transporting fire arms. Not a bad Idea, realy. Although, that's not possible with a pick up.

But I've never heard about transporting "factory sealed" alcohol 'beyond the reach of the driver/passenger(s)'. To me, that is a bit paranoid. A sad state of affairs when the local constabulary is to be feared in this way.

When I purchase bottles, I either secure them behind the seat of my truck or place them in a cooler along with any meat/ milk or other perishables. Sacks want to roll out of my truck if I put them on the floorboard. Its bad enough loosing a jar of sauce or condiments this way. loosing a 30+ dollar bottle of whiskey like that would be enough to make a grown man cry.

I cannot help you with getting the smell of bourbon out of your wife's car, but I am working on my own type of car air freshener with the scent of bourbon. I take a scent wick, dip it in bourbon, and hang it in the car ......... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ......... bourbon!!!

The scent wicks are easily recharged to maintain that fresh bourbon smell.

I think you may be on to something here. Perhaps I could mask the bourbon smell with another smell. I bet my wife would love the scent of Lagavulin saturating her vehicle. Nothing says "clean car" like the smell of peat, brine and iodine.

I feel your pain...... had a bottle of Black Maple Hill in the trunk, was only there for an hour, get to the reception (my friends wedding) and the bottle had blown the cork.....cracked the wax seal and all.......but had not lost a drop; needless to say I replaced the cork and left it in there; figured I would drink this one and get a new bottle for my friend; unfortunately on my way home it decided to blow the cork again and this time I was not so luck for it to be right side up....lost all but 2 oz....at least I have one drink to mourn the loss with

And yes my car has a sweet smell to it as well; I kinda like it. Hope it does not eat through the paint or the trunk
