Makers Mark Black Top

I am currently bidding on a Makers Mark Black top on an online auction. My final bid was 4000 yen (about $40), anyone ever have this and think it is worth more?

I have a couple of them David, bu I haven't opened one yet. They have been discontinued for some time now, and are bottled at 95 proof instead of the regular 90. I would say at that price it would definitely be worth buying.

No sooner did I write that, than it went over the 5,000 yen mark.

Well there are 5 days left in the auction in case i change my mind.

These typically close on eBay for $70/¥7000 and up, and no -- I wouldn't buy at that price. (It was my all-time favorite, though, for ¥2500 in the Narita DFS many years ago!)

You're probably better off looking for it as a "dusty" in Japanese mom-and-pop liquor shops. There was a tiny place down an alley next to my old sales office in Tokyo that had the complete Blanton's and Four Roses lines, all of the Old Man Winter's and Olde St. Nick's and an Evan Williams 23 year old in the old straight bottle (a true dusty!) I stopped shopping there when I found better prices at Kawachiya, but they closed for good sometime between visits when I wanted to track down some of what I just mentioned.

I've gotta believe that's not the only store like that, and somebody's gotta have some old MM black wax (and maybe gold 101 proof) on the shelves. It's long gone from big places like Rakuten and Kawachi.

I am not a MM fan in general but I think the black top is much better than the red anyway. Mitch from Twisted spoke told me that he was pretty sure that the black is 9 years old at the gazebo 2006.
