This drink has always sounded so good to me. However, I have never had one that I really enjoyed. I don't know if I have never had one made correctly or if it is just, in the end, a drink I don't like. :skep:

Here is a great recipe from Gourmet magazine, page 53 of the February 2006 issue. A great drink for a cold night with the winds whipping around the house and down the chimney and into your bones.

To make four drinks:

2 cups water

one-half stick unsalted butter

one-fourth cup packed dark brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

one-half teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

one-fourth teaspoon ground cloves

one-eighth teaspoon salt

two-thirds cups dark rum

Bring water, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt to a boil over moderate heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer, whisking occasionally, for ten minutes. Remove from heat and stir it rum.

I would guess any dark rum would work, and that an expensive dark rum would be wasted when charged with defending against this onslaught of spices.
