4R Yellow - the thinnest, weakest, cheapest, *good* bourbon?

It's only 80 proof, and I generally favor the higher proofs.

It's only $22 (cheap, imo).

It's sort of like Straight Bourbon Lite (sorry, but it is...).

The evil blended 4 Roses actually was marketed as a "light whiskey" I believe. Never tasted that but I did smell it once. Well, I attepted to smell it. All I got was the dust in the cuboard.

Anyway, I entirely agree with you. In spite of its proof, it is a delicious, well crafted whiskey. Perfect for manhattans and a great summer-time sipper. A good gateway bourbon too.

Add me to the list of one who really likes this bourbon. It packs a goodly amount of flavor, for just an 80 proofer. I really rip through this bottling when I have one open. They don't last long on my shelf. Very drinkable. Yes, perfect for the warmer months. And, only $18 here in the Deep South.

Correct...a great "value" bourbon!

I picked one up for under $15.00 at the Binny's 15% off sale last weekend.

"Light whiskey" and "blend" are not the same thing. In the bad old days, Four Roses was, indeed, a cheap blend, but never a light whiskey to the best of my knowledge.

Light whiskey was a phenomenon of the late 1960s, the bourbon-maker's answer to the rise of vodka. The Standards of Identity were even amended to make it possible.

(3) "Light whisky'' is whisky produced in the United States at more

than 160[deg] proof, on or after January 26, 1968, and stored in used or

uncharred new oak containers; and also includes mixtures of such

whiskies. If "light whisky'' is mixed with less than 20 percent of

straight whisky on a proof gallon basis, the mixture shall be designated

"blended light whisky'' (light whisky--a blend).

Thanks for the info Chuck! I wasn't implying that light and blended were synomymous. I think I just remember the stuff being really light in color and nose and thinking "this must be what they meant by light whiskey". Anyway, thanks for the correction.

The only current brand of light whiskey I was able to find in a google search was Colonel Lee by Tom Moore/Saz. Are there any more out there?
