I'm not at all sure, but that may be the place where Ben Kickert works, Corsair Artisan Distillery, although I don't see White Tail listed under their products.

We found out about it when a local spirits rep toured our facility and told us about it (it was on the shelves before we even knew there was another DSP here).

I haven't been there, but the rep I talked with said they are basically a big warehouse where they mix carmel extract with bulk HH juice. Apparently they have a pretty massive bottling line there. I am really curious who is behind the operation.

Now I will admit we are experimenting with some flavored whiskies, but ours are completely different. We are starting with our own beer/mash and as it distilling we pass the vapors through our vapor basket to infuse various (all natural) elements. We have a Pumpkin Spice Moonshine that started as a Pumpkin Ale and infused pie spices on the distill. We also have a Russian Imperial Stout where we placed hops in the vapor basket. Certainly not traditional, but it will turn heads and push the envelope.

Seems unlikely that they did this just to knock-off Red Stag, which after all is less than a year old and far from a proven hit. Inquiring minds want to know. Come on, Ben, BG's not that big.

This whole thing was a surprise to us. Their DSP # is 2 later than ours. We received ours mid-2008 and their label approval was submitted at the end of May. So the whole thing has been on lightening pace for them. I am guessing these guys are in cohoots with one of the big producers. These guys are not following the path of Micros. They received instant distribution all over the place and obviously have major production capacity. If they have those kind of resources it doesn't make any sense for them start with such an odd product. It is also interesting how their label is worded, especially with what we know "bottled for Blue Star Distilling Company by Three Springs Bottling Company." I have heard the bottling line is pretty massive and I wonder who this Blue Star is and what they have planned... another DAvid Sherman or KBD? Are the two sister companies? Who knows.

The name on the COLA is Andrew Wiles and I have never heard of him... that just adds to the mystery.

I am going to have to do some recon to see what their place looks like. I will keep you posted.

While I have no desire to buy this (I won't say I won't try it if it appears on somewhere for tasting) actually caramel goes very well with bourbon. When we were in Vegas last month, we had lunch at BLT Burger which had a milkshake made from ice cream, caramel, and Makers Mark which was fantastic.

As I've said before in the Red Stag threads, "flavored whiskey" has been part of the Standards of Identity for decades and differs from liqueurs in terms of sugar and GNS content, though I haven't made a careful study of it. Point is, it's nothing new, i.e., not a sign of the Apocalypse.

But that doesn't make it right.
