I've told the story before about how they acquired these bottles, but I'll tell the abbreviated version again. Their son-in-law's grandfather was the long time sherrif in Tarrant County (Fort Worth). He recieved many gifts over the years including tons of bourbon........but he didn't drink. About 10 years ago he told Steve to come by his house and take home all these "gifts" he had been collecting in several closets and in the barn. There were numerous SW bottlings, old Jack Daniels, decanters of all types of whiskey, pocket knives, etc etc etc. Steve hauled it all home but didn't have room for all of it so gave away most of the VOF's, VVOF's etc and kept the JD stuff. These bottlings were all still in the original boxes wrapped in tissue. Unfortunately, most had been given away before I saw the bottles at Larry's and asked about them as I knew Larry doesn't drink bourbon.

Randy, that story brought tears to my eyes. It seems to me Bourbon is even better when there is a story with it.

Last night I had a pour of Willett green to - Em and Reid - IT also brought tears of joy to my eyes.

Tonight I'm thinking Handy will be just the ticket.

A BT single barrel bottling from a small store in Fulton, IL is really hitting the spot today. Very smooth and flavorful.

Good. Stay away from your WTKS Pewter, OK?

Why have you taken a special interest in my Wild Turkey? :skep:

Time to pour a double. The Tribe just lost their best young player to a gruesome stomach turning leg injury. :puke:

Not Santana?

I haven't heard.

On topic;

I opened up the Four Roses Single Barrel Cork N Bottle Selection Barrel #13.

This is the most in yo face single barrel I've had.

At the tame 100prf this holds up to the barrel proof LE releases.

It explodes with flavor.

I'll try some water with it tomorrow,... but not tonight.

Recently, I have varied between Old Grand Dad 114 and VOB 100 BIB. Both appeal to my palate quite well, but I favor the OGD 114.

Had a great night last night jamming on the Allman Brothers with a couple of stiff pours of George Dickel No. 12. I'm not as crazy about Dickel as some folks here but I have to say that it was really hitting the sweet spot last night, so it's gone up a notch or two in my estimation.

It's hot where I am, and the AC is off as it is being repaired today. Starting off with some OGD BIB with a few ice cubes, as it's hot. Soon to be followed by EWB and Coke because it's good that way and it's hot.

Did I mention it's hot?

Tomorrow it's supposed to be cooler and if not, the AC will be working again, so I will be opening my first bottle of WLW. Looking forward to that!

Cordially,

Trace T.

Decanted the VOF '58... had to sample it.. a few times. It is so amazingly smooth and sweet that I thought all of the alcohol had evaporated out... it may have evaporated down to 95 proof.

The OFBIB distilled in '48 is almost as sweet, but with a definately more pronounced oaky finish. Odd considering the VOF is 2 years older.

Working the Maker's 46 tonight. I'm well into my second bottle of this. Quite Frankly, I continue to be stunned by how different to regular Maker's the 46 is. A coupla pieces of wood, and a few months, did this? Honestly, I see hardly any familiarity at all, between regular and 46. Not sayin' it's better, but it sure is different. If one was to ask me what the flavor grain is....I'd say rye... I must say that I really do like it. But, I really do like the standard Maker's, too.

Finishing off the last of a bottle of OWA with the age statement tonight. Moving on to its NAS replacement which I actually thought was a little better when compared side by side.

I had WT 12 gold folio and OFBB 2004 before dinner yesterday and JDSS with he apple pie for dessert. The honey sweetness of the Turkey really fond the spot last night. I believe that bottle have grown by oxidation.

EW White label BIB..... Greg's recent posting encouraged me to revisit this "pedestrian" bourbon and it reminded me as to why I have a few in the bunker. This bottle has to be on the top 10 list of greatest values on the shelf today. A great pour for under $13.

A vatting of George Dickel Black Label and Maker's Mark. The Dickel was a mingling of whiskey distilled around 1970 and current Dickel Black Label. (Dickel, unlike some other (most?) whiskeys, showed little flavor change over this period although the older one did seem heavier and richer). It was half the Dickels, half Maker's.

The combination, a four-grain, is heavy-bodied and full-tasting. The Maker's provided roundness and evened out the perfumed edges of the Dickel. Few straight whiskey minglings are bad (it is hard to go wrong with products whose profiles are fairly uniform) but this one is particularly good. Some may end up at Gazebo KBF.

Had a little get together last night and we did a flight of Rye's - Michters, Van Winkle and Handy. It was an enjoyable line up.

Willet Family Estate Bottled Single Barrel

Selected by The Bourbon Society Of Louisville

17 Years Old

133.7 Proof

Distilled April 6, 1993

A "Wheated" Bourbon

Barrel No 33A

Bottle No 143 of 144

I got three bottles of this "expression", as my wine drinking buddies would say and I'm glad I did.

I have been been playing around with it, trying it neat, cut to 118prf and 108prf.

A little fire on the nose at all three proofs along with red hots and hard candy.

The neat taste is very similar to the nose, it becomes softer and much more friendly cut to the lower proofs.

The hard candy becomes some what cinnamony.

A little oak on the finish, but the good kind, not woody, and it stays alive for a long time.

Ya gotta do a lot of swallowing and that is a good thing.

This is one of those bottles that you will have to try several times to nail it down and I'm up for it.

Now that I sit here and ponder the after taste, which btw lasts forever, I think me and ole bottle #143 are going to become good friends.

Nice review Oscar.... sounds like you made a great buy!!!
