JB 6 grain before dinner yesterday, ORVW 10/107 after and JDSS with the late apple pie for dessert. Everything tasted superb this evening and I get more and more fond of the 6 grain. I wish it had been 100 proof instead of 89 though.

Visiting with a good friend..... 2010 EBSG 4R OBSK followed by a ORVW 15/107 SB from Beltramo's (Spg??). Both were outstanding in very different ways....

Maybe, one of the finest whiskey sours that I have ever constructed, on this hot August afternoon. I don't have the patience for making my own, so I use the Mr & Mrs T's Whiskey Sour Mix. To date, it hasn't hit the spot. But, today, I threw in 3 marachinos, some of the juice, and a healthy dollop of Stirring's Blood Orange Bitters, on top of the Buffalo Trace, and it absolutely blossomed for me. I think it was the Stirring's that brought this around. Anywho, it's fabulous. :yum:

It shows that mixed in the right way, certain ingredients can produce a very good result. I just found this with a blending of 2 parts rock and rye, 2 parts ND OG 86 proof, and 1 part a blend of North American whiskies I keep. If you get the balance exactly right it is a rich smoky whiskey drink, lightly sweet and a little fruity.

The odor in the empty glass is as good as a second dram.

All these products, while they can be excellent on their own, really come into their own with the right combination. This is why (I can see) the whiskey sour, Old-Fashioned and Manhattan (amongst others) are justly renowned.

Thanks to Rod, I am drinking Fighting Cock 8 year old and it is freaking great! Heaven Hill bourbon at it's best; aged enough and high enough proof where I think they're whiskey shines! Strangely I actually think this is better then the 15yo.

Thank you Rod!

You're welcome. Enjoy!

Winding down a very nice weekend with a splendid neat pour of WT 12 CGF.

I would put it in the appropriate thread, but I hate to tell this sad story twice...this bottle is now empty...sniff....sniff....:(

Home from another long day of surfing and relaxing with Fighting Cock 6yr 103pf before heading out to the local pub for dinner.

The tropics are finally starting to heat up and send some swell our way. Colin sent us this past swell, let's hope the storms with names keep coming.

Tonight it's OGD BIB, with a couple of ice cubes. I liked this one the first time I tasted it and it's growing on me very quickly. Plus, the retro-orange bottle is fun to pick up and pour from. I think this mash bill's result and I are going to be friends for a long time.

I had help killing most of a bottle of Lot B. at my bro-in-law's wedding last night and had a blast.

Today I took the kid to see Restrepo and I'm easing out of the weekend with a bit of ER 10/101.

Well, I am having some FR Yellow Label, FRsmB, FRSB then I will move on to the EBSG OBSK Barrel #5 bottling.

This in honor of the American Cancer Society Gala in Modesto, CA last evening. Where I held a Four Roses tasting event pouring Yellow Label, FFRsmB and FRSB. I made many friends and added some new bourbon lovers after tasting.

Dickel ch before dinner today and first OGD 114 1981 followed by the current after. I did find the current to be better this day.

'03 AAA 10 year. Unfortunately, I think this bottle, which is mostly empty has taken a turn due to oxidation. Not by a great deal but the off notes are there nonetheless.

Elijah Craig 18 year Single Barrel.

I have to say that I think I hate this bourbon. I gave it another chance tonight. I am not experienced enough to say why or exactly what I don't like... I get this musty/sour/astringency (?) from it. I have no idea what's going on here. Does anyone else get that from this or do I have a bad bottle? I wish I was drinking my OWA 107 like last night. Life is indeed fraught with obstacles.

musty/sour/astringency

Is it a slightly mint (not fresh, like mint in vicks) or eucalyptus flavored piece of wet soggy wood?

If so, that's probably just EC for ya... being a single barrel and all some may not be nearly as good as others. I'm not sold on EC18. I've had it a few times, all slightly different, all had the above flavor that I really just didn't care for that much.

The bad EC 12 I had had that, combined with a newspapery/fuzzy mold/metal/acid taste... but the finish is where it was REALLY bad with the fuzzy-mold taste/feel.

Thank you for helping me put my finger on it... Yes, it's sort of like there's Vicks / eucalyptus in there -- that's a good way to put it. I think I might just not be an EC fan.

That's kind of present in most heaven hill bourbons, at least to some extent. If Buffalo Trace has a "musty" personality, then Heaven Hill has that mint/eucalyptus personality hiding in there. (Some types more than others, some obnoxious, some not)

Mark me down as a must fan vs. the mint but I don't mind the EC18. I doubt I'll ever buy another bottle of EC12 though.

Back on topic.

I hated EC12 but if I remember correctly I didn't think the EC18 was too bad at the distillery but that's a small sample. I'm not planning on buying either of them.
